Hey everyone,

I'm currently with optus 'cable' but am getting a lot of disconnections much like dial-up. My modem switches offline and there is no net actiivity. I get a message "network cable is unplugged."

I'm disconnected most frequently during summer/Winter especially when the weather gets very hot/cold.

Any tips/ideas as to why i get such disconnections?

Thanks!

You think it has to do anything with damaged phone line/cables?

No...already mentioned, it sounds like a modem problem

Well you see, when i was on Dial-up..... the same thing occurs; Disconnections during extreme weather conditions. There was once occasion where i was disconnected from 9am to 9pm!

Are you on 'cable', or ADSL? If you are on ADSL, then it would sound like you're right. But cable uses a different physical wire than your dialup or ADSL and should be less prone to problems like this.

But Cable connections are shared within a street (sometimes a few streets), therefore when load gets too high (usually during the summer), dropouts are experienced.
Cable doesn't disconnect or "drop out" when the load gets too high, you just don't get any response because of high traffic, just like a normal LAN.

If the computer says the network cable is unplugged, then the connection between the modem and the computer was physically severed, either the modem broke, switched off altogether or really being disconnected (ADSL) because of a bad line.

if ur with optus it isn't a modem problem. Some contractors have done dodgy jobs on optus cable installation and the bolts at the top of the telegraph pole have rusted causing regular dropouts especially in heated conditions. Call optus and they will have a qualified technician change the bolts free of charge if that is infact the problem. I know for a fact the technicians are annoyed because this problem is occuring frequently due to dodgy contract work.

Actually it was a feature article in APC a few years back.
Cable does dropout (after being unresponsive) in times of high load.
That is interesting. I've never heard of this feature as part of DOCSIS.

Logging into the cable modem might give some clue as to whats going on.

Yes i am with Optus. That is very interesting what you just said. I will ask them if they could do a check up on that.

I called optus this morning after being disconnected like 5 times already. He babbled something about APC. What's APC?
