Employees over time become unmotivated and dissatisfied when there seems to be no incentive in what they are doing. Performance appraisals reward staff that perform to or above expectations maintaining staff motivation and job satisfaction which is key to staff retention and high productivity. Nevertheless, performance appraisals also provide a model or benchmark for employees, aiding in the development of the employee by acknowledging lapses through its function a control measure. It's important to note that inappropriate distribution of appraisal like rewarding and benchmarking can really and royally screw a business, e.g. being sued for sexism because only male employees are given appraisals or only males are promoted in the last 20 year.
