guys how to learn mod 7 and 8 in 4hours
mod 7 can prolly be summarized in a few short vids tbh, remember the types of pathogens (bacteria, virus, fungus, protozoa, prion, macroparasites) infectious disease examples for each, active and passive immunity, vaccines, antibodies and antigens, lymphatic system etc. also pandemic vs epidemic but that’s p straightforward.

mod 8 is meatier so spend a lot of time on that, ear-eye-kidney stuff you can remember by drawing diagrams, and researching the technologies for disorders. homeostasis is straightforward so im sure you already have that down. there’s also non infectious diseases, which you need to have an example for:
- environmental
- genetic
- nutritional

and basically epidemiology also falls largely under mod 8, so remember the types of case studies and what makes an effective study—usually there’s a question asking about a particular study, and to evaluate it (looking at what’s good and what’s bad, e.g sample size, duration, controls, etc)

i can’t give specific advice cause obv the content pulled is random. but they’re usually evenly spread amongst the modules, so make sure you’re on top of revision

Also time wise, it’s pretty optimal (at least in my opinion) to blitz through multiple choice, finish the rest of the paper, have a little bit of extra time toward the end and spend that double checking/verifying my multiple choice

hey, does anyone have any tips for bio mc? i usually get to the last two answers, but often pick the wrong one.
generally for multiple choice look CAREFULLY at the verbs they use - ones with X "always" happens/causes Y or any definitive verbs tend to be wrong (but depends on context), read carefully, process of elimination and try to apply as much theory knowledge + common sense as possible

What kind of marks are the people above you getting? If you do well in the exam, then overall I believe that you will do well. Even though your moderated internal mark is out of control, 50% of your marks will be from tomorrow's exam. So just do your best and your results will show it.

When they say 'evaluate the method used in this epidemiological study'... does our final judgement have to be a yes / no or can it be half of each, provided that we justified each side? Also do we have to discuss it in terms of validity / reliability / accuracy or is it just the general features of good epidemiological studies

yep, absolutely use validity reliability and accuracy for this. it usually requires a greater scope of judgement than yes or no, so depending on the question's terminology you'd respond accordingly for example:

'This epidemiological study is somewhat effective as it uses a large sample size, long durations of time with regular follow ups, and a control group. however, the imbalanced distribution between the male and female smoker groups skews the validity of this epidemiology, as it is not equally assessing the likelihood of developing lung cancer in both populations.

it is reliable because.... e.g it is conducted over extended periods of time
it is accurate because... it utilises a large population with a controlled demographic, which reduces outliers etc etc

just talking about good features will get you around the mid range, the higher marks require detailed judgement on both its strengths and weaknesses

i think it would be best to have a definate judgement just in case. it would be good to say briefly that it is valid, etc but i feel like it depends on the q. if they were like oh jessica did an epidemiological study and there was flaws then defs do it but if it was like the australian government then you could just mention it probs

agreed, but better safe than sorry you need an obvious judgement for any evaluate/assess, whatever the direction of ur discussion of the study leans towards do the judgement based on that (ie mostly positive > good study, and vice versa if it's a question that is obviously ambiguous in credibility and all that)

I suck at epidemiology so badly idk why, how do you approach it? what should I be thinking of first what should I be asking before I answer the question?
start by highlighting the relevent info from the q and like what the verb is. if its evaluate u need to make a judgement (it doesnt reallllyyy matter what u pick as long as u have a definate answer with proof from both sides) ((i mean as in pick what you think is true and not what the marker will like)). to get it out of the way start by saying ur judgement just straight out.
then you can do like dot points or like + or - if u want to make your points clear. but make sure you have solid points for both neg and postive!!! i usually match the amount of points to the mark allocation just to b safe.
think validity (are they randomly removing test subjects?), accuracy (is it repeated) and reliabiliy (is there a bias in the people/animals they are testing?) and then usually something about like is it testing a hypothesis or accutally finding out info

okayyy that makes a lot of sense, I think the amount of marks usually allocated for such questions freaks me out but ill try to do a bunch of that now, you too all the best!

Feeling super good for bio now. I got a summary of almost all 36 pages of notes in my head after skimming iver them, going for a run and reciting them to myself like a madman. Just need to add the bastard koch and his postulates and more detail on action potential and im good!
