First part is just algebra bashing, I'm pretty sure you'll be fine with that
The second part can be re-written as
 = n(n) - (1+2+\dots +n) + n(1) = n(n+1) - \frac{n}{2}(n+1) = \\ \\ \frac{n}{2}(n+1) )
The series 1..n is a simple arithmetic series.

If you want a challenge, try to solve the questions using a combinatorics proof i.e. design an experiment where the process generates both sides of the equation.
