Al Qaeda militant did not kill Bhutto: spokesman

Al Qaeda-linked Pakistani militant Baitullah Mehsud was not involved in the assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, his spokesman says.

"I strongly deny it. Tribal people have their own customs. We don't strike women," Mehsud's spokesman Maulvi Omar said by telephone from an undisclosed location.

The Pakistan Government said on Friday that Mehsud was responsible for Ms Bhutto's killing as she left an election rally in Rawalpindi on Thursday.
Cities shut down

Daily life for tens of millions of Pakistanis is on hold, with major cities virtually shut down as the nation mourns the assassination of Ms Bhutto.

On the second day of official mourning for the slain opposition leader, most people were unable to buy food or petrol, with all shops, fuel stations, banks and offices closed down.

The streets of the country's main cities - Karachi, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Peshawar - were largely empty, and in many places there was evidence of the unrest that has left more than 30 dead since Ms Bhutto's killing.

Burnt-out cars littered the streets in the southern town of Larkana, a Bhutto stronghold where groups of her supporters were roaming the streets shouting slogans against President Pervez Musharraf.

The situation was tense in Karachi, Pakistan's largest city and the economic hub of this nation of 160 million people, with a heavy army and paramilitary presence on the streets.

Few people dared to venture outside and even the country's largest private charity, the Edhi Foundation, said its ambulances had been wrecked by vandals.

"They've smashed up our ambulances and we don't have any fuel," a foundation official in Karachi told AFP.

With the fuel shortage, the unrest and the official mourning period which ends on Sunday night (local time) following Ms Bhutto's murder on Thursday, most people were unable or unwilling to move about.

Buses were not running, few taxi drivers were working and the roads were dotted with vehicles left behind when they ran out of petrol, AFP reporters said.
Graveside visit

Meanwhile, Pakistani opposition leader Nawaz Sharif is heading to the grave of his assassinated counterpart to pay his respects, his spokesman said.

Mr Sharif was to leave from his stronghold in the eastern city of Lahore with a delegation of around 50 party officials for Ms Bhutto's resting place in the southern village of Ghari Khuda Baksh.

"The purpose is to personally convey his condolences to the Bhutto family," his spokesman Siddiqul Farooq said.

Ms Bhutto was buried alongside her father, former premier Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, in her family's imposing white mausoleum on Saturday amid wails of grief from hundreds of thousands of supporters.

Mr Sharif told AFP on Friday that Ms Bhutto's husband, Asif Ali Zardari, asked him not to attend the funeral because of security fears.

Both Mr Sharif and Ms Bhutto were two-time prime ministers of Pakistan.

Formerly bitter political rivals, they had formed a loose alliance ahead of elections scheduled on January 8.

From the way they're putting it that Bhutto died from hitting her head it seems like the Pakistani government is trying to detract from her death/matyrdom and even making her out to be a bit foolish for popping her head out of the roof.

But yea i agree with Exphate it still doesn't change the fact that she did die as a result of the bomber's actions and that she has achieved matyrdom.

Its gonna be interesting seeing what happens in Pakistan's upcoming elections. Musharaff's popularity has gone downhill and the fact that people are blaming him for Bhutto's death as well as the pressure hes getting the West doesn't help him either.

another story:

Bhutto aide says she bathed body, saw bullet wound in head

A CLOSE aide to Benazir Bhutto says she saw a bullet wound in the Pakistani opposition leader's head when she bathed her body after her assassination.

Ms Bhutto's spokeswoman Sherry Rehman, who said she was in the former prime minister's motorcade at the time of the gun and suicide attack on Thursday, rejected Government claims that the death was caused when Ms Bhutto's head hit her sunroof.

"I was actually part of the party which bathed her body before the funeral," said Ms Rehman, who added that her car was used to transport Ms Bhutto to hospital.

"There was a bullet wound I saw that went in from the back of her head and came out the other side.

"We could not even wash her properly because the wound was still seeping. She lost a huge amount of blood,'' she said.

Ms Rehman accused the Government of mounting a cover-up over Ms Bhutto's death.

"The hospital was made to change its statement. They never gave a proper report," she said.

"I believe the interior ministry is saying that she died from some concussion that may have taken place against the sunroof.

"This is ridiculous, dangerous nonsense because it is a cover-up of what actually happened."

Man this is so fucked. Who ever you blame for the attack, musharraf or al-qaeda, they both have their motives, which to some extent has been accomplished. I feel for Bhutto's mum. Whole family lost to politics, husband, probly the most recognised pm in pakistan's history was hanged by the military, one son shot, one poisoned, daughter killed and now she has only one daughter left.
As for the shot or head hitting as being cause of death. Im with shot. THeres video coverage showing the gunman and him weilding a gun so i doubt he missed from that range. Also, it would be a way of bringing down her heroine-ism. Now pakistan going to dogs (musharaf), hes probly gonna stay in power longer coz all other contenders boycotted =(

LOL you're kidding yourself if you think the leaders of Islamic shitholes like Egypt, Pakistan, Saudia Arabia etc. aren't deeply corrupt (and yes they are exponentially more corrupt then the leaders of western countries like Australia and the US).

Washington and London wanted her back and wanted her to become prime minister once again. This was not because they viewed her record in government as a shining example: in truth, she achieved virtually nothing during her two premierships. But Mr Musharraf had grown so unpopular that his Government risked becoming wholly ineffectual. The answer was to unite Pakistan's secular, pro-Western politicians in one administration. This would isolate Islamist radicals and create a government capable of fighting them effectively.

Looks like Musharaff will have to change his bullshit story.

Her son is 19 and his father (Bhutto's husband) who was also known as Mr 10 percent will actually be in control. Her husband is as corrupt as they get. Everything in Paskistan turns to shit. No wonder so many of them end up migrating to the west.

Agreed about Musharaff. I don't know many people who actually support his regime.

It's certainly a tragedy. Pakistan's been experience immense turmoil for quite some time, and Bhutto was just that beacon of hope for so many of the Musharaff haters.

Depends what the alternative is and what sort of political culture the country has. Pakistanis aren't exactly the world's greatest civil libertarians.

Meanwhile this gives Musharaff a motive for having Bhutto killed sooner rather later:

On the day she was assassinated, Benazir Bhutto was due to meet two senior American politicians to show them a confidential report alleging that Pakistan’s intelligence service was using US money to rig parliamentary elections, officials in her party said yesterday.
The report was compiled by the former Prime Minister’s own contacts within the security services and alleged that the Inter-Services Intelligence agency was running the election operation from a safe house in the capital, Islamabad, they said. The operation’s aim was to undermine Ms Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and to ensure victory for the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) party, which supports President Musharraf, in the elections scheduled for January 8.
Patrick Kennedy, a Democratic congressman for Rhode Island, and Arlen Specter, a Republican member of the Senate sub-committe on foreign operations, have confirmed that they were planning to have dinner with Ms Bhutto on Thursday evening but were not available for comment yesterday.
