I have been given an essay to do in relation to belonging 'belonging is just a state of mind' just wondering if anyone has any thoughs that might help me when looking at this question. i am studying strictly ballroom and my related texts are othello and the song took the childrem away.

you can talk from a post-modern view of othello where Iago does what he does to belong to Othello
Roderigo helps to help get desdemona unrealising the ramifications

i dunno about the other two but u could carry those ideas forward more

I think the question is getting you to comment on the fact that you can sometimes look like you belong (have all the outward appearances) and yet still not feel like you belong. This relates to St patrick's college well.

Belonging is always a PERCEPTION.

eg. A random person driving past a group of school girls in uniform in the quad-
Driver sees them as a group due to placement, uniform, age group etc. They belong.
A girl could feel she does not belong, and is in fact being bullied.

It depends on people, places, the group, a community, the larger world etc.
It is SUBJECTIVE if the individual enriches or challenges a group.

Hope I'm not way off.
