Hello All,

Yeah lil about myself. Yeah completed my HSC in 2004 and did fairly well while doing subs like 4 U maths, Phys n Chem etc. This year i've been doing BCom/BApp Fin at Macquarie and i can't say like it that much. Thus i've applied to transfer into Engineering or Science in USyd or UNSW. I'm particularly interested in doing BE/BSc.

I was wondering what a good combinations of majors would be. I'm looking for two different major which have similarities but can take me into two different fields. I was considering doing Bio Medical and Pharmacology or maybe Civil Engineering with Environmental.

Any suggestions, plus information about the work load required, types of subjects done and career opportunities would be great.

Thanks,

Gihan Fernando.

The choice of major is ultimately up to you. It's a question of what you want to major in rather than what majors go well. It depends on what you want to do and what you like to do.

I assume that you will start at first year again. You have the choice of taking flexible first year path, which allows you to get a feel for each of the streams or go straight into the specialisation. Both would see you complete the degree in the same time. I'll just outline some of the subjects in flexible first year.

All first year engineering students do maths. Semester one would have either chemistry or physics depending on the stream. In addition there is a introduction course that will take you through each of the disciplines (eg civil, mechanical), and a computing course (total bs in my opinion).

In semester two you would have mechanics. If doing civil you would also do geology and professional engineering. Geology is boring at best, and professional is possibly one of the worst and most useless subjects offered. If doing biomedical you would do some biology and perhaps another science subject, in my case chem.

I'm not sure what the later year subjects would be and what they are like.

You'll be looking at at least 20 hours a week with those subjects.

Geology is fun and you learn a lot. And you have this guy

I am about to enter the 3rd year of Civil, and after doing but one 'environmental' course I am hooked. The job prospects are not even second to nursing!

It all depends on what type of person you are, but I have noting but praise for Civil Engineering (with or without environmental)

Agreed. Tom, Hubble is an awesome lecturer. He's a great teacher and he's also very easy to get along with.
