I'm thinking of doing one of the two at Sydney, but I really don't know which one I'll prefer. I'm leaning more towards Exercise and Sports Science/Nutrition...as it seems to be more interesting, but Physiotherapy looks very good as well.

Does anybody on here do these courses and know what they (and the lecturers) are like?

do the lecturers you get really matter for when you pick your course? lecturers always change and you'll always get good and crap ones, i think you should pick the course on the basis that you like the job more

I do physiotherapy and its full on. 7 subjects 5 days a week pretty long days. You really have to want to do it because there is alot of hack work and heavy science in the first couple of years. But I love it!! The exercise and sport science course seem to alright, I think for 1st year they have 4 days and they sit a balance of theory/practical subjects. I have a few friends who do the combined nutrition course and they really enjoy it. They get a wide variety of subjects of theory and practical but they get to travel to both Cumberland Campus and Main campus....They like it because they to do get the best out of both campuses- Cumbo is much smaller--it's only a short train ride away.....
Just post if u want any specific details...

1st year-- Heavy sciences -all related to human body systems and movement in the case on anatomy
From year 2 onward you learn your different specialistaions of physiotherapy. Like musculoskeletal , paediatric, cardiopulmonary, neurological physiotherapy etc. You also learn skills that may be related to profession- we currently do the place of health in society, last semester we did psychology and there will be more psychology next year. Not this reflects nuffin of psych course it is all focused in relation to PT.
I think ppl enter PT thinking they will all be working/hoping to work with elite athletes which is not the case they make up like 0.1 % of the population. Job prospects are good particularly since our population is aging and the rates of conditions like arthritis, stroke etc are increasing. Of course with more study you can enter fields of specialisation like sport. And job opportunites for Australian PTs particularly from Sydney are in high demand. We just had the head of Sports Physio Australia come and talk to us, and we've had a PT from the Royal flying doctor service soon we have a speaker coming in who works in disadvantaged Sth American countries so their are a wide range of job opportunities.
Unfortunately I guess, PTs work pretty long hours but that is the same for anyone really in the health system. The estimated starting salary isn't flash I hink it is estimated at 42,000 but it varies according to where you work --private clinic/hospital/retirement centre etc. Of course with more study and experience the pay rate increases--but all PTs warn us that you really have to love it because it is alot of hard work for not a lot of recognition economically and in terms of rank in society....

Hey sharks do thanks for the info, ive read more about it & it seems like such an interesting course & a great job how you can help people, the pay is pretty ok.

So can you work in as a physiotherapist straight after you graduate & you can open up your own clinic a couple year later, no need for another postgraudate degree? You dont need UMAT or STAT test or anything right?

Is it true that once you complete a bachelor of exercise and sports science you can enter into a masters of physiotherapy at Syd Uni or a course like chiropractic at Macquarie?

I do the double degree and I really enjoy it. We do a lot of the same and similiar subjects that physio do. Just a few things:

1) Its a new course - Im now in 2nd year and 2004 was the first year this degree was introduced so there are still a few kinks being worked out
2) Travel is a PAIN! Most days of the week (4 usually) you have to travel between the two campuses
3) Your lucky that this year the timetables of the 2 campuses are now running at the same time because last semester we had 4 weeks of exams instead of just 2.
4) First year nutrition is a bit of a bore but stick with it - dont give up. You have to get through the jnr chem and biology units, like all other science degrees, before you can start nutrition in 2nd year - so even though in first year all you do is chem 1A and 1B and Molecular Biology and Genetics dont get discouraged and give up - just think of all the fun you'll have next year.
5) Its a rewarding course. Its a full on 5 days a week no days off or anything 30 hours of contact a week with a lot of pracs but what you get out is what you put in
6) You get to meet a lot of friends because you become this small travelling group of sports science/nutrition students
7) you get the best of cumbo and the best of main campus unlike other poor cumbo students who are stuck out at lidcome all the time.

If you need any more info or to ask any more questions send me an email on schneiders_girl13@hotmail.com

hope i helped a little.

Yes you can. You have to get something like a distinction or credit average but yes from the sports science course you can do a masters in physio in 4th year.
