I hope they'll mark easier than our science department.

We had a question on galvanic cells, where we needed to label the anode, cathode, electron flow, salt bridge and electrolytes. It was worth 3 marks.

Apparently, if you write say Cu(NO3)2 and not write "copper nitrate" next to it, or vice versa, you don't get a mark. If you write both but don't write "electrolyte" pointing to it, then you don't get a mark. How crazy is that.

The HSC markers look to give you marks
From what I've heard the only place they are stingy and look to take marks off are the big 6 or 7 markers.

hmmmmmmmm no i have not been living under a rock i'd rather study than obsess over my marks, after all whats the point in worrying about your mark cos your only gonna get it if you put in the study,

people seem to be far more preoccupied with the marks and stuff rather than the exams i figure you study as good as you can, you go in and do the best you can and if you've put in the work you'll get the marks you need.

raw mark is your actual hsc mark, as in what you scored on the paper. scaled mark is the mark you end up getting in the hsc for that subject.
ehh that dosent sound right

have you been living under a rock?

ur raw mark gets aligned
and ur aligned mark is what u see on ur report
ur scaled mark u dont ever see , thats done by uac to calculate ur uai

my teacher is the writer of the HSC senior science paper and he's friends with the chemistry exam writer. He was saying that he knows that last year band 6 cut-off was around 84-85, because the dude told him. Or he could be completely lying :p

People who think that scaling/aligning (whichever you may prefer) is as simple as brining your exam mark to your assessment mark or vice versa is utterly mistaken. It is a common misconception and should be addressed. The "scaling/alinging" process is a much much more complicated than you'd think. It involves a variety of factors which ultimately contribute to your final mark. Moral of this rant is that do your best and see what comes out because realistically you're going to have a hard time figuring out your final mark just from other peoples speculations.

raw mark for band 6 would prob be around 75-80. But thats just going off 2003 cut offs in the hsc marks technical forum.

But we'll see.

ok, so say it was 85;

if i got an 85 in the hsc exam( before that whole scaling thing) and was ranked 1st from school with an assessment mark of 93, what would my overall hsc mark most likely be?

would my assessment mark drop down to 80's?
Since ur raned 1st, ur internal will either shift up or down depending on ur performance in the final HSC exam. if ur exam mark is the highest in ur class, then ur internal will be ur exam mark, so in other words, if u do get 85 (which in my opinion will align to about 94) ur internal will be 94.. however, let's say u got 70 in the exam (let's assume thats aout 80 aligned) ur internal of 93 will be lost, and ur final HSC mark will be 80!...UNLESS, unless someone in ur class (ranked under u) performs better than u, the ur internal mark will be their HSC exam mark

Example 1: (student A achieves the higehst HSC exam mark in school)
INTERNAL ASS. MARK - RANK - HSC EXAM MARK - FINAL HSC MARK
STUDENT A: 93-----------1/4--------94(aligned)---------94

Example2: (student B achieves higher than student A in the HSC exam mark)
STUDENT A: 93-----------1/4---------85(aligned)--------(85+95)/2=90
STUDENT B: 82-----------2/4---------95(aligned)--------X

u could have an internal of 100, and be anked 1st, but if u get 80 in the exam, ur 100 will be taken all the way down to an 80 (IF that's the highest exam mark in ur class)

In other words.........

Ur internal mark WILL be the highest HSC exam mark achieved in ur school and ur exam mark stays the same (now why didnt i say that from the beginning)
