Hi i was wondering if at UWS or any uni is their a course just for Bachelor of Medicine because i really would like a career in medicine, i like how Dr's Work in a medical center and would want to hopefully become a GP.

Just saying most those doctor's in the medical center are Regular GP's so instead of doing the Double Degree MBBS can you just do MB Bachelor of Medicine is there even such thing?

sound like a ridiculous question but i wouldn't want to become a Surgeon so im sayin to become a GP do you have to do MBBS or is there another way to become a GP without doing the MBBS course, Noob hear so dont rag me out :p

All Comments and Thought appreciated Thanks

I think you still have to do MBBS to be a GP as there are minor surgical procedures involved in your scope of practice in most clinical settings.

The joint medical program at University of Newcastle/University of New England is named BMed....but im not too sure of whether you would have to do surgery in your training.

BMED = MBBS = MbChb

The courses offered by all med schools are Australian Medical Council accredited meaning that they are the same, they just have different names. You must complete a recognised medical degree e.g. a BMED or an MBBS at an Australian or New Zealand university or overseas to practice in Australia.

To become a GP you must do a 4-6 year medical qualification and be awarded a BMed, MBBS, etc and then do 1 year of internship plus a further 2-3 years of training + exams to become accredited as a GP by the FRACGP( Federated Royal Australian College of General Practitioners).

5+ years med school + 1 year internship + 1+ year(s) or so residency + 2-3 years of traning to become a GP= 9 years minimum if your lucky, however their are not enough GP training positions we are about 300 short in NSW. So it will probably be a year of waiting. It will realistically take you 10-11 years to get there.

A GP is a specialisation like any other, however it only takes 2-3 years(unlike other specialties which take a min. of 5 such as surgery, etc) + exams, accreditation, etc.

If you don't believe me: http://community.boredofstudies.org/showthread.php?t=54449

ACCESS WA: "To be registered as a medical practitioner, the completion of the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery, followed by a year of internship, is required."

To become a general practitioner, you have to be accepted into a family medicine programme which incorporates a further four years of study and supervised work.
