Hey everyone,

I just wanted some opinions about what's the best university to study a Bachelor of Medical Science. I know Sydney has a good reputation for sciences and as a prestigious school but if I don't make the cut off, what other universities would you recommend?

Thanks

I was under the impression that this degree was quite useless (unless you're studying it as part of the USYD MBBS 'undergraduate' program). Better off doing Science/Advanced science and majoring in something like pharmacology or neuroscience

yeah, I was wondering about that too, because I'm trying to decide whether to do a bachelor of medical science or advanced science :\

In essence, it's a glorified BSc in Biology. I know heaps of people doing it but I think you're better off with a BSc as you get more flexibility with your units. I'm at ANU so they choose 3/4 each Sem for what you do if you're in Med Sci. If you do a BSc or BSc (Adv) then you can do a bio major or do the sam subjects but won't be as restricted. To answer your question, USyd is pretty good, although ANU is quite awesome as well. I've found that ANU Med Sci students seem to be really motivated to do Med which creates a competitive feel in classes as they all want to transfer or get into post grad med.

Well Bachelor of Science and Advanced science students at unsw study the same subjects. The only difference is that it is compulsory to take higher level (advanced) courses and do an honours year. Bachelor of science students can take on advanced courses if they want (subject to your academic results I'm assuming)

And medical science... the atar seems to be quite high because a lot of the students who got in didn't make it into medicine and are hoping to transfer
in first year the courses are similar to other degrees: biology, genetics, anatomy, chemistry, maths?

@above no you'd need an MBBS to be a doctor. If you have a B of Medical Science majoring in neuroscience you'd be a medical scientist with a major in neuroscience.

@OP, I was going to do Medical Science and then try my luck at post-grad dentistry but then I strayed away from it because it was such a broad degree and I much prefer a degree that is more specific so I ended up choosing diagnostic radiography instead. But to answer your question, yeah USYD isnt bad. UNSW isn't bad either. And I wouldn't discount UTS. So yeah.
