Hey guys,

I am looking at doing (obviously) a B.of Education (Prim) next year, and wondering if anyone is currently doing it, and what it entails rah rah rah. Also what would be the best uni to do it at? Some people have said ACU, others Sydney....

Thanks.

Here's a rundown of B Teach/B Arts (Primary) at the Uni of Newcastle..

First year: mainly theory based, you do a lot of work with early childhood and secondary people as well, so its good to get an idea of where your kids come from and where they go at this time... also, some foundations courses in KLAs

Second year: KLA studies galore... you do a foundation course and a 'teach and learn' course for each KLA throughout teh degree, as well as electives in which you can choose to major in a particular KLA..... second year also includes 2 x2week practicums (in may and nov) on teh same class....

Third year: more KLA extended studies (electives) and a 4 week practicum.... fun fun

Fourth year: ties it all up and you do your teacher research project while on internship (10weeks).... or alternately in 4th year you can choose to specialise in Special Education, thus giving you an extra qualification, and an extra edge in the job market.....

hope this helps...

Also check out the thread in the Education specific forum, from memory someone has already asked this question....

Edit: just cause I'm feeling nice (and avoiding a Children's Literature essay) here's the link: http://community.boredofstudies.org/584/education/114751/uni-better.html

ACU has just introduced a new B Ed (Prim) course.. I don't know too much about it but most of the subjects are the same.

You can elect whether or not to do a Religious Education strand (this incorporates theology as well as KLA RE subjects). If you don't want to do this, you can choose electives in place of those subjects.

There are three types of subjects in the course:
- Educational studies: classroom management, psychology etc.
- Curriculum Foundation: Base subjects for KLAs
- Pedagogy units: more focused on the teaching of the KLAs.

I am in the old course structure, but a lot of the subjects are similar or the same just with different names.

As a university, ACU is pretty small in numbers (around 3000 at the Strathfield campus), however we are a national university with campuses in Brisbane, North Sydney, Strathfield, Canberra, Ballarat and Melbourne.

The beauty of ACU is that if you do the RE component, you are able to teach in Catholic schools as well as public and independent. After your third year you are awarded a B Teaching and can then casual teach in Catholic schools (which forms the prac in fourth year - I'm pretty sure only Catholic schools allow you to teach after 3 years, but I could be wrong).

If you have any other questions about the course, feel free to post them here or PM me :)

mishka, how come the UAI for primary teaching at the strathfield campus is 86.10 while at the canberra campus is 68.10? is it because of the location?

Ok so it must mean that if you only get the B Teach it's for teaching in NSW only (I knew it was one of the two!)

Without Wings is right about the religious education part of a course. I think Wollongong Uni offers subjects from the Diocese of Wollongong to allow you to teach in Catholic schools. Other unis may not offer it, however you can do religious education courses with the Dioceses around your area to gain qualifications. ACU offers the RE strand within the course so that it's all done in one go. When you graduate you then have the option to teach in whatever system you wish.

I'm not Catholic myself, so the RE component has been rather *interesting* for me, but I do enjoy it. I like the idea of having more options for casual teaching (I'm not sure if I want to pursue a full-time position in the Catholic system because some schools are rather strict on staff recruitment).

I suggest you go to a few Open Days for the unis you are interested in. Talk to the students currently doing the course and course coordinators to see if the degree suits you. You also have to consider the location of unis and whether you will need accommodation.

The UAI thing is, as mentioned, dependent on supply and demand. Our course doesn't take in as many students and is also dependent on how many people wish to apply for the course. I think overall, Education courses in all unis are becoming more popular (this may be due to the great scholarships offered by the DET, or the advertising campaigns for new teachers).

Do you think that primary education is becoming more popular? The UAI just keeps going up! What unis do you think offer the best courses and have the best employment rates post-uni
