Hi

For the BCom degree, I want to major in finance.

So when I pick my Semester 1 courses, do I pick the core courses for finance
or do I pick the core courses for commerce?

The core for commerce are:
  • ACCT1501: Accounting & Financial Management 1A
  • ECON1101: Microeconomics 1
  • ECON1203: Business & Economic Statistics**
  • MGMT1001: Managing Organisations & People
Whilst the core for Finance are something completely different
FINS1612, FINS1613, FINS2624 etc

Thanks

I think either way you have to do the core topics eventually and i guess its better to get the out of the way early, since they're prerequisites for other courses.

ECON1101, ECON1203, MGMT1001, FINS1612 and FINS1613 are offered in semesters 1 and 2. So basically choose 3 of those + ACCT1501. Note that I have not read the Commerce programme.

If you're a normal commerce student (not Co-Op) then you take the normal 4 compulsory courses in sem 1, then 4 electives in sem 2 (must take FINS 1612)

Then when you start your majors in 2nd year then you take FINS1613 and another other subjects within the FINS major requirements. There should be a "core" list and a long elective list within the finance major. Since FINS 2624 would need prerequisites, you'd start that during semester 2 of your 2nd year. Meanwhile, you can work on your finance elective list, general education, another major (if you want a double major) or flexible options (courses within the ASB but outside the faculty of your majors)

For Co-Ops, most take FINS1612 in semester 1, and leave out Management.
Then they take FINS 1613 and Mgmt during semester 2.

I'm not that clear on Eco/Comm.

Though I remember a friend who did QmA (ECON1202) in Semester 1 instead of Mgmt who did Eco/Comm.
