B Design Computing (1 Viewer)

I'm a yr 12 student who is really interested in Design Computing.
I've come first in every IPT assessment and I really enjoy IT, particularly databases, web design, animation and so on...

I'm competent in the adobe design suite and have a few websites out there, but I'm interested in hearing from DESCOMP students. I don' mind putting up with programming etc. but I want to be in a course where I'm challenged to do new things. Yeh that sounds pretty wanky but i hope it makes some sense. Is this the course for me???

Also, I've been reading about additional submissions. Do I only need to submit a portfolio only if I'm below the UAi cut off or would it help to put one in anyway ?
Any hints on a good portfolio???????

Hi, I hope this isnt too late, but I just graduated from this course, it is a great course, alot of fun and useful

As for portfolio, any work you have done, for HSC etc, any designs you've made or played with. Its not that important, as far as I know, not many people submit portfolios anyway, but I did...just to be sure If you need more help, please let me know.

This might be a little too late since offers went out the other day but I am a graduate of uSyd's b.Des Comp. I came into some web design work towards the end of last year.

Anyway, my 2 cents on the course, I had fun doing it and you get a sample of a good of areas in computer based design. From graphic to web, some light programming experience, though not in any commercially used languages (we worked in processing, a simplified version of java.)
It is, without a doubt, the royal sampler of computer based design.

The downside of the course is that you never go in depth on any subject. You come out a jack of all trades, master of none. You also find yourself perched somewhere between designer and developer. The options for electives and specialisation within the course are also pretty poor meaning if you find an area you want to focus on and learn more about you will probably have to teach yourself, select electives outside of the faculty or do some more study after the degree (which is only 3 years so you have time.)

You will defiantly get the chance to try new things with this degree, in my last year we got to work with designing for mobile phones (I think they are changing that to a newer technology now, mobile phones are sooo 2007) as well as 'Ambient displays' a wanky word for flashing lights that are supposed to represent some information. I have to say I never found myself pushed or challenged within the course however some of the theoretical subjects with 'Dr. John Gerro' did give an interesting perspective design.
