I got a late round offer last night into the B Bus/Comm (Advanced Business Leadership) which i never thought i would get. In the main round, i got offered a place for the normal B.BusComm degree, which i accepted and enrolled.

So now i want to unenroll in the BusCom course and re-enroll in ABL - i rang student help centre at Parra and she said to fill out a resignation form which i did.

I'm really confused by the whole thing - im unsure as to what classes to register for. Initially, i have the bus/comm course majoring in international business, so i was following that unit set.

Now that i have this new offer, do i have to follow its set? Because the degree has a common core year, i dont know whether i'm supposed to follow the course laid out in the handbook for ABL or for Intl...

Does anyone have any idea what i am supposed to do??

Any help greatly appreciated :)

Thats the the unit set structure for ABL, you will notice in this unit set it gives you plenty of room to still complete a key program. On the ABL unit set structure it says to do x amount of key program specialist units each semester which allows you to follow the unit set structure for the normal business/commerce with a key program in international business.
Unit Set

So you wont actually do any specific ABL units until your 3rd year which are advanced business seminars, business leadership, frontiers of business theory and analysis and entrepreurial team.

So for your first year these are the units you would enrol into:
Autumn session
200336.1 Business Academic Skills 200571.1 Management Dynamics 200083.1 Marketing Principles 200591.1 Introduction to International Business
Spring session
200101.2 Accounting Information for Managers 200184.2 Introduction to Business Law 200525.1 Principles of Economics
Choose one of:
200032.2 Statistics for Business 200052.3 Introduction to Economic Methods

You have to decide between stats or economic methods

thanks very much - i was looking at the different course structures and they didnt seem to match up with each other - like ABL was offering three key program electives, and the intl business course was offering two electives.

speaking of, what can i take as electives? info on the net is limited at best...

The ABL course is made up of 4 units and the Int B course is made up of 16 units(including the core units). So you only have 4 units free to be used as electives since degrees run for 24 units. With these you can do a sub major Course, it is possible to complete 2 sub majors or possibly a major though. For example the accounting sub major is composed of 4 units, 1 of which is a unit everyone does in the first . So would only use 3 of your electives instead of 4 to complete it.

There's no rule saying you have to follow the unit set structure they give you in the handbook they only recommend it because it will generally avoid timetable clashes with other units related to your key program and you wouldnt have any prerequiste problems. Atm im doing a key program in eco and finance with an advanced business, financial planning and finance law sub majors. Because im having clashses between my electives and key program units it was better for me to do some advanced business units in the 2nd yr instead of waiting until the last yr to do them.

Im not actually enrolled in the Bus&Comm Advanced Business degree.Im just doing the plain Business And Commerce with a key program in Eco and Finance and advanced business happens to be one of my sub majors, if that makes sense lol. Im doing the unit Advanced Business Seminars this autumn so ill let you know how that is.

The First year of business and commerce is pretty cruisy especially if you done Business or Economics in the HSC which will make life alot easier. Just go to the lectures and tuts meet some new ppl and enjoy urself, i managed an above credit average in the first year so its not that hard.

Are you going to the Parramatta Campus?

Yes, i did take business last year, found it pretty easy - just heaps of memorising stuff, which i didnt find too difficult...

thanks for answering all my questions :)

yep heading to parra campus. could have gone to blacktown, but really liked parramatta when i went there for the info days.

don't suppose you know anyone trying to palm off first year texts? they're really quite difficult to get a hold of.

hey,

yeah i got my first offer of the plain bus comm degree at parra, but last night (completely unexpectedly) i got an offer into my initial first preference (ABL), which i changed when i thought i wouldnt get in based on my UAI.

My UAI was actually 80.40 - plus the five points i gained for being a local student, plus another five for doing well in english and business studies.

Which made my UAI 90.40 - so i think i got in on .2

verrrry lucky!

i didnt expect to get ABL at all, but thought it was worth a shot, so i switched it to make it my first preference for the late round.

i say go for it, switch your preferences, you never know... i was very lucky to make it in, was pretty disbelieving last night when i was reading it on UAC.

from what i know, there are at least 1400 business/commerce offers made, and 42 made for ABL so far. i say go for it. people are going to drop out, or try again.

You can do what i done. Just do the plain Bus and Comm then either transfer to ABL after the first year or do the sub major in ABL and remain in Bus And Comm. There is no real difference you do exactly the same units just your degree will be called something different.

hey thx johnO and haylz234, really appreciate it. i would also like like ur opinions on the key programs. i was thinking bout doing international business and global management but there's also just international business. If i was to do the first one, the international business part of it wont be as indepth compared to the other where u just focus on international business....what do uthink i should choose? I like the prospect of doing global management too because it kinda opens my opportunities a little more...which my mum thinks is helpful when finding a job.

i guess it depends on what your looking for munchie.
i'm taking the international major because it offers me classes in international marketing, management, import/export - really just depends where you want to end up.

from everything i've read, it seems that international business and global management focuses more on the employment relations side, i.e. managing diversity, staffing systems and such.

do you know what you want to get out of the degree? where would you like to work/what what you like to do ideally?

yeah sweet :)

i got most of that stuff from reading up on the course guides in the UAC guide 09, and on the uws website handbook - i was tossing up between the two majors like you are, and decided based on the info given on the website.

don't go current students on the home page, go future students and search courses. it gave me more relevant info, and more of it.

also learnt a lot from the UWS guide they handed out at the open day - go to course inquiries in the new students bit and they will send you a copy for no charge.

hope that helps.

If youre not sure what you want in terms of employment after graduating you would be better off choosing a key program that offers a broader set of knowledge and skills, ie International Business And Global Management. It might not be as indepth compared to doing a key program in either International Business or Global Management but it gives you a broad range of skills you could take to more potential employers.

As Haylz said it comes down to what you want to get out of your degree and where u want to work in the future. If youre still not sure just go through the first year of uni and decide after that, it would be quite easy to transfer key programs between those three choices.

well the thing is theres no just global management its either (international business) or (international business and global management). yeah and i agree with u on possibly taking the double key program because it kinda offers more. But i was thinking, how does these key programs fair with that off say accounting? is it easier or harder?
because my dad's always saying accounting accounting accounting (he doesn't know every much a bit clueless lol)

and arent the first yr a bit different because say in accounting uve got -accounting info for managers- in which applied finance got something like ~aus. macroeconomy~
