Automotive or mechanical engineering (1 Viewer)

I want to get into race car engineering (working on v8 supercars, F1 etc) Which course would i be better off doing.
The automotive engineering course is focused on the automotive industry but the only place i have seen it is RMIT in melbourne and the uai is relativly high (87).
Mechanical on the other hand isnt as specific and i can do it anywhere closer to home.
I do physics, chem, maths, business studies (it is soooo boring) and standard english and i am doing prety well in physics and maths so i can handle that sort of stuff.

You must get a Band 6 in 2 unit because you will be exposed to complex numbers and matrices which are completely new topics just to name a few of the mathematics in first-year and engineering requires very good mathematical skill regardless.

I recommend that you go for a mechanical course, it is more versitile than automotive engineering. Mechanical engineers also deal alot with the automotive industry aswell.

At UTS (and probably most other uni's) there is a Formula One Racing Team which builds their own car from scratch and races it for an annual competition. (It's called FSAE - google it).



In regards to marks, at UTS currently the UAI for an engineering course is 85 points.

You can increase your points by doing a number of things:

1. Doing subjects such as:

• Engineering studies;
• Industrial Technology;
• Information Processes and Technology;
• Information Technology;
• Physics;
• Chemistry;
• Software Design and Development;
• English Advanced, Extension 1 or Extension 2; and
• Mathematics Extension 1 or Extension 2

Will earn you 2 additional UAI points each. Up to a limit of 6.

2. Undertaking the engineering questionare will earn you an additional number of points.

The mechanics subjects are much more difficult than the maths subjects. I don't know anyone who did 2u and is not struggling in them right now, bridging courses dont help by the way.

Not saying don't do it but it will be difficult. Mechanical course is best by the way. The versatility helps you and allows you to specialise later on if you are so inclined.

We had the same program at USYD. I did Mechanical Engineering aswell and would highly recommend it if you want to get into racing. At usyd, the FSAE project is an extra curriculum activity in your junior years and then you can chose to do your final year thesis on it where you can design parts of the fsae car and build it aswell.
