Something about how Gillard consulted the East Timorese President, who occupies a figurehead role similar to the Australian GG, about the establishment of a regional refugee processing facility rather than the Prime Minister. Or maybe vice versa.
Thankyou.

Essential Research just released a poll:

55-45 2PP to Labour
Primary votes:
Labour: 41%
Coalition 38%
Greens 13%

13% looks to be a new base vote share for the Greens (it was previously 10% or so) - and during Gillard's honeymoon. Excellent.

looks like the election bribes are starting

Gillard announces tax break on school uniforms

Gillard announces tax break on school uniforms

A tax break of up to $779 on the annual cost of school uniforms will be offered to parents if Labor wins the next federal election.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard made the promise, which would cost about $220 million over four years, in Canberra today.

The tax break, aimed at easing cost-of-living pressures on families, would apply only to uniforms bought after July next year.

Parents would be able to claim up to 50 per cent of the cost of uniforms.

The Prime Minister said the move was an extension of the existing education tax refund, which applies to books, stationery and computer items.

At present, families weren't claiming the full amount of the tax break, which totals $390 for primary school students and $780 for secondary school students, Ms Gillard said.

About 1.3 million families would benefit from the extension.

"This is a measure to help ease the costs of getting kids to schools for families," Ms Gillard told reporters in Canberra.

Ms Gillard said she supported the wearing of school uniforms.

"I believe part of a high quality education is learning how to present yourself to the world and that's what school uniform is all about.

"I also believe having a school uniform helps undercut the kind of unhealthy competition we can see at schools to have the latest, most expensive, fashionable gear," she said.

"I also think it undercuts some of those unhealthy things that can happen at schools when there's a competition for the latest, most fashionable item.

"That's why I think this is appropriate."

Ms Gillard said wearing a school uniform helped form "a sense of self" and personal discipline.

"As Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull stood at the dispatch box and announced the close of the 2015 parliamentary year, you could forgive his frontbench for the look of self-satisfaction that momentarily crept across their faces. "

"Ms Gillard herself continued to put a brave face on what had happened to her old party. “I believe in hard work for its own sake, work aimed at no particular end, such as a better life."

Abbott just squibbed what could have very nearly forced an election.

If he didn't move the motion of confidence in the Speaker, the Speaker would have resigned but it wouldn't have had any ramifications beyond that. The house would just elect a new one.

Shorten was absent without a pair, Windsor had knocked off early, the opposition had the numbers to defeat the governments speaker nomination (notwithstanding Slipper crossing the floor) which would have paralysed the operations of the parliament. Theoretically the GG can intervene in those cases although it's likely Shorten would have crawled out of sick bay to resolve it I admit.

god, they are talking about allocating a lot of the revenue from the carbon tax back to middle and low income earners. funnily enough, labors idea of middle to low is <80k. i'm sick of this fucking country becoming so socialist, all this shit just acts as a disencetive to get ahead in life.

fucking pleb low income earners should be forcefully euthanised at age 60 so they don't burden us with their pension claims.

I'm not entirely convinced it acts as a disincentive for everyone. Those who depend entirely on it are going to depend on it because they aren't very employable, regardless of what incentives you can provide for them.
