Yeah, Rees looks like a safe bet for leader. Everyone else is either too incompetant , inexperienced or able to be traced to the "old guard" of Iemma and Carr.
While i agree with the broad sentiment of the remark, will the ALP dare risk the fate of the next election on someone whose connected to Orkopoulos?

While Watkins appears to have a higher profile and greater popularity than some of the others, he doesnt even have the support of his own faction, so how can we expect him to buck the dominace of the Right.

Tebbutt according to reports, still wants to stay at home for her young son. But I hear ambition still burns brightly in her. But will the ALP risk the specter of another power couple and the possible complications that it could create?

If someone like Sartor gets the job, the ALP is finished for sure at the next election, though it seems that is the case at the moment, with the last newspoll, when adjusted for true preference flows showing 54-46 - a coalition victory in a typically Labor state.

Well, im glad at least your not the PM

Apart from the obvious mistake, we actually emit more than .5% and on a per capita basis we are the second highest in the world.

And stop whining :p

Rudd's a moron.

Ever since he came to power all he does is push these nonsense leftist crap like global warming and the whaling issue.

At the same time he supported censorship laws for the Internet.

I'm already sick and tired of his Socialist bullshit.

Uh he really hasn't done much with the whole Whaling issue (You just can't fuck with the Japanese people, and even Garrett knows it)

And global warming.....LOL this whole stupid thing about taxing people because of the weather beinf different doesn't mean ass. Watch as low income families end up on the street because they have to pay the extra bill for Rudd's 'global warming' scheme.

Government to cushion carbon costs

YOUR living expenses will rise by just under 1 per cent in the first year of the Rudd Government's proposed scheme to cut the amount of pollution Australia produces

The Government today unveiled details of its emissions trading scheme which will come into force in 2010 – just in time for the next general election.

Emission trading schemes are aimed at reducing pollution by way of financial incentives and penalties for companies and industries. Higher costs are supposed to encourage companies to become more energy efficient. Because they're likely to pass on higher costs by way of price hikes, it's also supposed to make consumers think twice about paying more for energy-hungry goods and services.

ALP won't contest Mayo by-election
The Australian Labor Party has confirmed it will not contest the by-election in the South Australian seat of Mayo, caused by the retirement of Alexander Downer.

The former foreign affairs minister is retiring to work in an Adelaide business consultancy and will also act as the United Nations special envoy to Cyprus.

In a statement, the ALP National president and South Australian Premier, Mike Rann, said Mayo has always been a safe Liberal seat and the Labor Party will not be running a candidate.

Mr Rann says the federal Adelaide Hills electorate has been won 11 times by the Liberals on primary votes since it was created in 1984.

He believes people in Mayo should not be facing another Federal by-election eight months after re-electing Alexander Downer.

Mr Downer is Australia's longest serving foreign minister, and also served as Liberal Party leader before making way for former prime minister John Howard.
pretty obvious choice really, they don't want to have the pants beaten off them - as would be inevitable in mayo - and then have the libs spin it as a rejection of the government.

Yeah, looks like the obvious move, wouldn't want to waste resources either. This keeps provoking the question in me at least, how long until Vaile and Andrews etc go? Will they go?

I wonder if the ALP will contest this by-election? If they aren't going to contest Mayo, I doubt they would contest another safe Coalition seat in Lyne, even if it would be a three cornered contest.

It will be funny if they do contest for the seat but I doubt it, they'll just lose again. :)

I'd like the ALP to run, it is highly probably the Coalition would retain with a substancial majority, and it would give the Coalition another chance to hammer the ALP at a national level.

I do think however, the guys who will be coming in now, such as the Chesters, Hartsuykers and Cloutons, along with those elected at the next elections are really the make or break generation of parliamentarians for the Nationals. They can continue along as they are now, and probably look at a future as a continually diminutive force on the national stage or they might need to assert their independence a little more, like they did back in the days of Anthony and Sinclair to produce a more defined Nationals brand. (Although, to be fair, Anthony and Sinclair had a higher proportion of Coalition members than Truss enjoys.)

The Northern Territory is going to the polls early with an election about to be called for August 9.

Don't see any chance of the CLP winning. They got wiped out at the last election and currently hold only 4 seats.
Current Legislative Assembly: Labor 19, CLP 4, Independents 2

Sportingbet
ALP 1.18
Country Liberals 4.50

I think the CLP will close the margin by alot, but won't win. I think they will win Braitling along with Drysdale and Goyder, taking them up to seven, a gain of three. I also think the CLP have big chances in Port Darwin and Brennan, which would bring the margin to ALP 14 CLP 9 IND 2.

Also to note, the former CLP member for Solomon David Tollner will be running in Fong Lim, so a high profile candidate might just deliver Fong Lim to the CLP.

Re: Australian Politics Chatter Thread

PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd has branded the Howard Government "an absolute failure'' in preparing Australia for the end of the economic boom.

And he says the former Government "failed to do anything of substance'' in 12 years to prepare Australia for the future.

Mr Rudd made the comments in Sydney today at the launch of Inside Kevin07, a book on Labor's journey to federal election victory written by journalist Christine Jackman, who writes for The Australian.

The Prime Minister said a desperate need for change led to Labor's third-largest ever swing last November.

He blamed the Coalition for living off the resources boom rather than boosting core productivity, leaving Australia behind the rest of the world and ignoring damage to the nation's economy, environment and water resources.

"The Liberal operating procedure for more than a decade was fine for a boom, but an absolute failure in preparing for after the boom is over,'' Mr Rudd said.

"Australians were becoming conscious that they were being left behind the rest of the world in education, research, science and innovation, and in new technologies like broadband.''

He also said the previous Government dismissed the looming domination of India and China and did not prepare Australia for the "dawn of the Asia-Pacific century''.

"The world began changing around (Australians) in ways that were potentially quite threatening to their understanding of their long-term interests,'' Mr Rudd said.

"The Liberals in government exhibited no interest whatsoever in doing anything for Australia for these great changes unfolding around them and to navigate the choppy seas that therefore lay ahead.''

Eight months into his own leadership, Mr Rudd said Australia was facing some of the most alarming problems in history - citing crises in the financial markets, climate change and nuclear proliferation.

"The global storm clouds gathering are even darker ... reinforcing the urgency for a long-term responsible reform agenda to see Australia through,'' he said.

The launch wasn't all political opportunism and doom, though.

Mr Rudd also shared with the audience some of the more ridiculous moments of last year's election campaign.

He recounted how a plane carrying 25 journalists from Mackay in Queensland to Perth was forced to make a pit stop in Alice Springs when the toilet broke down.

And at a Brisbane shopping centre, how an elderly lady in a wheelchair urged him to touch her "fulsome bosom'' where she was hiding her pet marsupial.

"A terrified sugar glider felt as if it had been somehow trapped in a ravine somewhere in the Himalayas,'' he said.

Pretty much sums up that Rudd was living under a shell when Howard was in power for 12 years.
