Re: Australian Politics Chatter Thread

I had a dream that John Howard was bald and dying of cancer and we all felt sorry for him.

In context, I watched BSG 406 last night.

Lol, saw that. What a nob. I feel that this split has blown any chance Barry had at the next election and I assume that this was the aim.

Just as the ALP were tearing themselves apart about power privatisation, this comes out. Exactly what the NSW Liberals needed.

In other news, has not been a good day for the Liberals. In Victoria the state campaign director apparently uttered an anti-semetic sentiment against a Jewish Liberal candidate.

Malfoy, it IS right-wing to want to destroy an organisation before you see it succeed without, or in spite of, you

Well if we're redefining what constitutes left and right based on where your sitting, then I might as well apologies for not being aware that you were crowned supreme majesty of all things political.

Well like most law students, I feel that I am too large and complex to be pinned in one hole.
Striding the political spectrum like a colossus, beyond good and evil, soaring majestically in the breeze of relativism, occasionally swooping the crippled and savaging them with my splendid claws and terrifying beak - only to disappear just as quickly with beak and claws full of their prized flesh

I dunno if I really believe his musings of a quasi-religious nature, just think it's a bit of a wank that often comes off pompous. I don't mind people engaging in discussions however they feel, but when they appear to speak only in obscure terms and baseless rhetoric I tend to think they're never going to bring anything substantiative to the table and they're wasting everyone's time for the sake of some image game.

I highly doubt that Peter Debnam resigning from the front bench will have any impact whatsoever. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that it would probably increase the likelihood of the Opposition forming Government. Debnam is finally where he should have been following the election loss last year.

The state government is politically and bureaucratically inept, and it would take a lot more to write off the Oppositions chances 3 years out from an election...

Yeah, fair enough.

Anyway.
I dont see enough of Paul Keating anymore. From about a month before the election until the apology, he was in the news at least every week with some outrageous hilarity.
I'm assuming that his work is done, so he beamed up to Jupiter.
Meh. He'll be back for the Republic wars.

How can you miss Paul Keating? He is the definition of a hemorrhoid. Nobody misses a hemorrhoid.

Haha. Miss is probably the wrong word. I miss the conditions (12years of mind-numbing tranquility) insofar as they made me miss him - the razon-sharp, maverick, crazy-brave, manic-depressive blablabla. It was a great contrast to the Howard government.
I guess he'll crop up every now and then to spray Rudd as weak, but it's not the same.

Also, I think that Australia will collapse within an hour of Kerry OBrien leaving journalism

Agreed.

The 7.30 Report, is the only legitimate current affairs program on television, and I guess he adds a lot to that legitimacy. Lea Sales just doesn't have the same capacity to continually ask the hard questions..

Migration labour plan
The Rudd Government is planning an overhaul of the country's migration program and will consider a new unskilled migration program based on similar schemes in New Zealand.

The Government announced earlier this week that migration numbers would be lifted to 300,000 a year, the biggest increase since the post-World War II influx of migrants in 1947.

Immigration Minister Chris Evans earlier said he wants to trial the guest worker scheme with migrants from the South Pacific, and says the scheme will have a double benefit.

"One is the need for labour in a number of our industries, particularly in seasonal industries like fruit picking," he said.

"But the other aspect of course is trying to stabilise the economies of the South Pacific."
Brave new world.

Banjo slur irks Queenslanders

HE is one of their own, but yesterday Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was accused of likening Queenslanders to hillbillies. Former Labor leader Mark Latham revealed Mr Rudd was fond of saying "once you leave Brisbane and cross the Pine River you can hear the sound of banjo music". The banjo reference conjures up the infamous rape scene in the movie Deliverance with the line "squeal like a pig".
