I suspect something like that. No definite, competent, long term successor to Brown I think=no greens. I suspect both Milne and Rhiannon consider themselves natural successors to Brown. I for a while thought Organ was best poised to do it, but he seems so damn dedicated to his electorate and won't run for the senate which is really dinting his fender.

I think the Greens are stronger with a good leader like Brown - he is replaceable. But regardless as long as they hold firm on their idealogies and don't stray and become ridiculously alarmist they have a future in Australian politics.

I think they need to conduct extensive research into what killed the dems. A stable, intelligent leader with skilled access to the media and a widely known philosophical platform is essential. I attribute the death of the dems to the fact that post Stotty nobody knew who the leader was or what he or she stood for(I mean the average voter btw don't now come and say "it was andrew bartlett and he...")

I agree wholeheartedly - but I think with a charismatic leader, someone even better than Brown, the Greens have a chance of becoming a real force in Australian politics. Though that would require a perfect storm (not unlike in NSW) where the left is forced away from labour.

Obviously if they had someone better up their sleave it would be great for them but I think it's crucial whoever succedes Brown has got more standing than anyone else in the greens. Nobody in their right mind would think they had more authority in the greens than Brown right now which is very good for the party, But I can't imagine someone managing to gather the neccessary authority in the limmited time frame to be the successor you're talking about. A Garrett defection might do the trick but I can't really see who else could pull it off.

Regardless, they do have some bearing. You can't say Nelson's poor poll rating wasn't a major contributor to his being tossed as Opposition Leader.

Seeing Turnbull drop to 20% Preferred Prime Minister must surely leave a number of Liberal supporters worried. Including him, as that really is heading toward Nelson levels.

I have no doubt Turnbull will come good in time. It would be hard for anything to stick, to any prime minister in the term and period in history Rudd's been in office. Plug away. Stay the course.
