Manne is another academic who tries to portray 'material gain or progress' as having no moral attachment. He isolates the 'populist' issues as being of a moral nature without recognising actual achievements.

He professes to make a judgement of the current government as more moral than it's predecessor based upon a few symbolic gestures in its first year in office. Give me a break.

Why do you say that? There's really no indication that this is anything like previous financial crashes (except the GD), nor that it's getting better any time soon.

Unless you're implying 'recession' to mean strictly quarters of negative growth, not the depression that continues afterwards - though even then I still think you're being too optimistic, as it were.
I'm loathe to based things on a hunch, but I think as the composition of employment (service.... etc and other industries) and levels of entrepreneurial activity increase; coupled with developing green and information technologies, we'll see job creation on an increase by the end of March or something similar.

I think employment type composition and who and how people are working will change substantially in the future and lead to us being recession proof. (Or we could just listen to that Hayek dude and get rid of central banks and then the business cycle would disappear but where would the fun in that be?)

Manne attacks record of Howard government as moral failure.
Abbott defends, saying what he told my pols class last sem, that there are greater goods.
Manne dumps on that saying that Kant and Catholicism see no such thing.
Abbott gives up, saying that Rudd sucks
Manne says Rudd's ok, but timid on climate change
Abbott says vote Coalition
Manne says only if you go back to Deakin by dumping populism, neo-conservatism and neo-liberalism

You are a treasure. I'm far too hung over to read such a screed this early in the morning.

I can see why such an exchange would be electrifying. I actually don't mind Abbott at all, he's a nice enough guy one on one. The big North Shore Catholic Old Boy's Old School Tie network adores the man.

Re: Australian Politics Chatter Thread

Yeah, Abbott's great. I think he hates how he has become the public face of Catholicism in politics, because he's a headkicker.
But to me, he's a bit of a rat. Also represents the Catholic break from Labor and tries to argue that social conservatism is consistent with economic liberalism. Rudd's social and economic conservatism are the last crucial rungs on the ladder to reenter the universal church through the window they have left open.

This is my quest, to push them to follow that star, no matter how hopeless, no matter how far.
To be willing to give, when there's no more to give
To be willing to DIE, so that honour and justice may live
And I know, if i'll only be true, to this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm, when i'm laid to my rest

And the world, will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove, with his last ounce of courage
TO REACH, THE UNREACHABLE STAAAAAAAAAaAAAAAR

Well, time will tell, but I'm inclined to suspicion simply because those are some of the sectors hardest hit by the financial crisis (R&D and manufacturing).

Re: Australian Politics Chatter Thread

James, let's get one thing straight - I am not a labor voter. Not the state level anyway. All I am saying is that the labor party, in all its incompetence, is still pretty much on par with the state liberal party.

If I were to vote, i would go with an alternative - say, the greens?

Re: Australian Politics Chatter Thread

What's the quick case against NSW Libs? It must be pretty substantial.

I thought that the suicidal one was pretty close, and that they lost the last one because Debnam was a dopey toff, Iemma looked like a poor baby seal, and Rudd was crazy popular

Re: Australian Politics Chatter Thread

Well, I really can't envisage Liberals being better (unless they learnt some new tricks), so it's Greens for me.

I'm determined to see this succeed wildly, though, so I'm really a one issue voter right now.

Anybody care to bring me up to speed on the policies of the NSW Labour and Liberal parties? A lack of partisan bias would be appreciated.

Re: Australian Politics Chatter Thread

Welsh Labour have a variety of rich policy platforms on boosting education investment, raising standards in healthcare, and removing "litter, graffiti, and signs of neglect".

Since 1999, they've created 130,000 new jobs, so i'd suggest staying the course

Llwyddo gyda Llafur!
Getting results for Wales.

As far as I can tell, there are no new plans to develop the south though
Hope this was helpful, cheers

The Labour Pairty is ane o the muckle poleitical pairtys o the Unitit Kinrick. It is the govrenment pairty in the Wastmeenster Pairlament o the Unitit Kinrick the nou. The heidsman is Prime Meenister o the Unitit Kinrick, Gordon Brown. He is efter Tony Blair whae wis the first Prime Meenister frae the pairty tae hiv haed three consecutive terms in govrenment

In Scotland, it is cried the Scots Labour Pairty. Wi mair commissioners than ony ither pairty but the Scottis Naitional Pairty in the Scots Pairlament, it leads the hame rule opposition. Its heidswumman wis Wendy Alexander.

It is nou regairdit as mair o a social-democratic pairty nor a socialist ane.

Hard to believe that's written in English, eh?

Is there really a great difference in what Bob Carr was doing when he smacked Brogden around the ring for a few months? I'd guess people would vote for Nathan Rees for much the same reason they voted for Bob Carr in 2003. Just as people said that Keating's arrogance undid labor in 96, that the build up of issues, work choices, Iraq, David Hicks, Tampa etc toppled Howard in 07, There is nothing exceptionally poor the government has done in recent years that other governments don't do, it's just an old government that people are tired of and when the mood of the elctorate says "change" the governments mistakes are mangified.

Let us not forget that when Bob Carr resigned in 2005 a bunch of lemmings from the centre of Sydney all held their breath thinking "this is it, the big man is going to storm into Canberra now and do to Howard what he did to Fahey." I think most polls between the 2004 federal election and Kevin Rudd's leadership had Carr being prefered to the labor incumbents. I reckon state labor's performance will only be slightly worse the federal liberals come election time, and god bless him O'farrell showed the political nous of Sir Robert to rally behind Debnam instead of going for it himself. In doing so he avoided taking on a new premier in a honey moon period following a relatively popular departing premier and by appointing an aggressive, partisan guy to the leadership plenty of blows were landed on the government in the campaign that ultimately set liberals up for a comfortable win in 2011.

this is a srs question. i still cannot believe labor held onto cabramatta. your either got down syndrome style retardation, or just an ignorant fuckhead.

but the poll is for the next state election. vote please.

edit: we have 3 state labor supporters. epic fail.

It's a marginal seat now, thanks to the Liberals.
