Ok, I'm doing Year 12 this year and have basically no idea what I want to do after I finish. I've been looking at the Audio Technology course at the AIM and it looks really interesting. Can anyone give me any insight into their opinions of the course or career opportunities from the course? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

As much as I dislike AIM, having been there-
the Audio department, based a 'Q studios' in Darlinghurst (Goulburn Street) is actually quite good. Wether or not the same teachers are still there- (the teachers that made the department worthwilde, beacuse to be brutally honest- AIM is a load of crap.)

Fee wise, it's a little pricey.

You have 3 'Trimesters' a year- meaning it cuts just a little into your summer holidays (but you still get heaps anyhow)

For Audio (Bachelor) degree, you're paying $8 100 a tri mester, so.. Round it off. With your 'Pay earlier' discount (one of Aims student deals. You pay early on in the semester, and you pay less) you're aiming at around... 24 000 per year. (3 year course)

Career Oportunities:

Teaching Audio (heh- that's how the teachers at Aim... came to teach at aim)

Working on tour with various artists as a sound engineer.

Working at live venues such as the Sydney Entertaiment Centre, Horden Pavillion and other sites.

Working with TV and Radio stations sound departments.

Working at theatres and places like the opera house.


Those are really just some of the few things you could possibly look into. Think big. Aim big. (oh god that's like AÍM's corniest line.. -choke- )

Apart from AIM, you could go to an arts management degree- and they have AUDIO engineering courses at UTS (city campus). I don't know much about UTS's course.

If you're willing to work hard at Audio at aim. I'd say go to their open days, and see what you think

If you were going into 'Performance' I'd DEFINATLEY tell you not to go there. But Audio.

i was also thinking about doing that course at AIM, is it really that bad of a school? nooo, i am tossing up between AIM and JMC. any recommendations?

I don't know much about JMC, but you could give it a try- go to one of their many open days. (Apparantly there's quite a few). I know it's a little pricer than AIM, but AIM is already quite steep for their Audio course, so it doesn't make that much difference.

AIM is a shocking school- for some things, but like I said- Audio dept is quite good. Q Studios in Darlinghurst, a little run down, but they're actually good studios.

yea i'm thinking of doing the same. i went to the JMC and SAE open days, and they both have their pros and cons. SAE seems to be the most updated in technology, because it's an entire college devoted to music production and audio engineering. but then JMC has a good way of integrating projects and students so you don't need to look for your own bands to record...darh! decisions decisions...

One guy is an audio engineer @ Trackdown Studios at Fox Studios had a JMC qualification, nothing else.

It can be done, and besides, you would know, it depends on the genre you want to be recording/mastering for.
