so shadowdude, theres a guy at my skool who is currently coming first and is way ahead internally (in mx2). im ranked third and am a fair bit behind him, lets just say i become 2nd ranked after trials and i get the same exam mark as him, lets say 97 in hsc. does that mean i wont get 97 bcuz u say they take into account gaps, does that mean my internal mark will be reduced?
If you get the same exam mark as him then both your HSC external marks are the same. But because he was ranked first, he gets the highest exam mark as his moderated school assessment - for simplicity, we assume it'll be 97 as well. But because you were ranked second, your school moderated mark will be lower than 97 because you are 'a fair bit behind him'.

They take into account gaps for sure. Remember the HSC is about consistent effort throughout the year - and it wouldn't be fair for you to suddenly get 2nd and then get the same final HSC mark as the guy who was ranked first just because there were two same marks at the top end of the spectrum.

I dont think there is one absolute method used all the time, since as shadowdude mentioned, it would be unfair and silly. But most often, its the method I mentioned in my scenario because most often a persons HSC performance will closely match their internal performance. Ie a person coming first in a subject is unlikely to get 70 in the HSC exam whilst the person who came 2nd gets 90.

Depends on how far behind him you are.

It could be, though in my experience - I know they use the gaps... so until someone comes up with something - yeah. We'll agree to disagree =P

Fair enough, obviously there is a lot more to it then what I thought. Now I have no clue how they worked out my internal marks.

No, you'll find the HSC systems are more confusing.
