Applying to Medicine/ Dental after doing a Bachelor Degree (1 Viewer)

So.... I'm in a bit of a pickle. I've gotten a scholarship into UWS for Teaching. But I don't want to do Teaching that much ... I'd rather do Medicine or Dentistry. So is it better to do Teaching and then apply for Medicine afterwards? Also, how do you apply for Medicine/ Dentistry after doing a Bachelors?

If you are interested in doing medicine or dentistry, it is advisable to do a course which encompasses what you learn if you get into med/dent and this is usually medical science.

I think other universities will vary from point to point, but basically..

After you complete your Bachelors degree (e.g. Medical Science) you will send some stuff to the UAC.

You will need to give the UAC a QAS application, student application etc. Please check with the specific university you want to enrol in for extra details.

In addition, you need to perform relatively well in your degree (i.e. solid GPA), do GAMSAT test and then the interview process..

If you apply for graduate medicine you don't apply through UAC. USYD has a a totally separate application process to all other graduate universities. If you are applying to an undergraduate university you may need to apply through UAC but I am not 100% sure on this.

If you intend on doing the GAMSAT you should ideally get a science background. On that topic there are people who have performed well without a science background. I would suggest doing a degree which can act as a back up in case you do not make it into medicine. I have known people who have done the test 5 times but still fail to get into medicine. Be smart.

No matter what you do, if you really want to gain acceptance into medicine/dentistry it is imperative that you try and try over and over for undergraduate entry. I know some friends of mine who hedged their bets on graduate entry and never even considered doing UMAT while they were doing their undergraduate studies. Medicine is medicine, undergrad or post-grad.

And also what jobs/ careers are out there for medical science graduates?

I don't see a point in knowing the ins and outs of application at this moment in time. It is almost the same as UAC.

Jobs for med science graduates include research, lab work etc. in a multitude of fields depending on what you want. The problem is they aren't specialised in one area so people tend not to hire medical science graduates if they can help it or unless you have an honours or PHD. You can become a university lecturer or professor if you get a PHD or additional qualifications.

I am very passionate about teaching, but my parents don't want me to do it because Australia is facing a teacher over supply and it's a high stress job. They're worried I won't find a job and that I won't cope with it. That's why they want me to do medicine post-graduate since I didn't do UMAT. They think being a doctor will be easier on me. I know that they're just worried about me and my future ==' I know it's a stressful job, but I actually like helping others and teaching them. I'm just checking out info about other degrees.

It takes a lot of high school leavers to realise this. You should not emulate your parents' dreams. It's your life and a big part of leaving high school is gaining independence and being accountable for your own decisions and choices. It's great that you know what you're passionate about. A lot of people don't. Go for it.

You can't let your parents determine your life for you, if they want med that bad, they should probably be doing it themselves. As you've said, your passionate about teaching. And there are a wide range of jobs available for teachers. There's like an oversupply of med graduates apparently. And how will being a doctor be easier? I'm not sure if you've read any threads about med, but there's a really good one that talks about what it's like to do undergrad and it sounds arduous. I think your parents might be misinformed there.

School holidays and 9-4pm job. How is teaching a high stress job compared to medicine I don't understand? There is an oversupply or teachers but there is also an oversupply of medical students. If you want the lowest stress job as a doctor you become a GP, but even then I would assume it's worse than being a teacher. I know of female surgeons who spend 6am-8pm working (does not include getting home time and don't forget the oncall) and studying on weekends. I don't understand how they would have time for their children.

I don't think you understand what medicine entails.

Hellooo it's OP again... hahaha... one more tiny question! How exactly do you "try for undergraduate med. entry"? Does anyone know what to do if I wanted to transfer from another uni into UWS medicine. I know I have to do UMAT but what else would I need to do?
