Applied Finance and Economics (1 Viewer)

Does anyone know if HSC Maths is greatly required for this course. Can i Stil Get In without doing Maths and is there alot of maths involved in this course

hmm, HSC maths wouldn't come into use much - but i think is reccommended.
Most of the *maths* for econ is not difficult at all, like, even the 2u or 3u maths course is harder than 1st year ECON/STAT/APP FINANCE sub areas. (From my opinion)
As my accounting lecturer said
"Most ppl who think you do accting think ur really good at maths and numbers. You just say yes, make them think that. Because most days for acctants are adding, or subtracting,....on exciting days we multiply or even take a square root of something"

What year are you in ? Doing HSC next year ?

yeah you need at least 2 unit maths to do econ110 which is a prerequisite for applied finance and stuff... if you didn't do 2 unit maths in the HSC you have to do math123 which is LIKE a bridging course but not a bridging course in which the course counts towards your credit points

i didn't do math in year 12.. but i did 3u in year 11!!
if you didn't do math, just do MATH123 or MATH130 as a co-req with econ110/111 as anne said!!

as for the maths in the course.. its not difficult as josh said!! i think the recommended math is just to get you to think and improve your logic....

Yeah, like i said, the maths u do for 1st year uni is like.....they either teach you in the subject, or, you can work it out as it is not hard at all..

Just do 2u maths in HSC and you should be fine.

what year are you in rnb_master?

if your not that fond about math (ha what sane person is..), then just do a math uni at uni. its the easy way out.. 13 weeks of math plus 1 final... but it will cost ya.. :S

i actually just finished my HSC
i did Maths 2u but didnt really try cause it wasnt goin to be counted in my best 10 units
as a result i dont really know my maths - gettin around 55% in my exams
i just wanted to mak sure i could stil get into the course even without knowin my maths very well - i guess i wil be takin maths123 to help me out?

one final thing the uni wil guide me as to wat i hav to do to meet the requirements for the course wont they - they wil explain each course i have to do like math 123 to meet the course requirements caus im guessin ppl wouldnt really know wat to do without someone explainin everythin like the good people such as urselves.

Yes, academic advisors will tell you what subjects to take.
Even if you do not enrol in a math subject, in which you really must have, they usually let you know within the 4 week period. (The time you can add/drop subjects with no penalities)

wat is the general consensus at macquarie about the subject area in general - is economics at all interesting caus i found it quite easy and interestng in yr 12 just wonderin if it wil be the same next year
also are career prospects great from the courses associated with finance and economics after completion of the degree

HSC Economics and Uni economics are two different things. While HSC econ is more descriptive in nature, uni econ is far more analytical in nature. HSC econ is a lot lot more easier than uni econ.

LOL pfft i think all you need is a band2 to do econ110 and econ111 ....... if you've done maths in the hsc and you get really low you'll be fine ... and you wont have to do math123 which is a bitch

ECON110 and 111 is tough. Your mind has to always be in gear and up to date with new concepts.
I didnt do ECON in HSC, but i remember, that our MACRO (ECON110) lecturer told us to abadon all forms of HSC ECON approaches in answering questions. Dont know why, but still think some things from HSC are useful. i.e, You get to skip 8/50 chapters in the MACRO book .

well im not exactly sure yet because its such a broad field .
i was thinkin possibly something with investment or banking.
i guess i just want to see how the degree goes and see where that leads me.
do u hav any thoughts to wat career path would be the best caus i want to do the combined finance and eco course

you know it is possible to double major in b. economics (finance and economics or finance and econometrics)....

thats what i'm considering doing and just dropping my applied finance degree... save an extra year.... the only difference being is the lack of electives and you don't have to do 200 level actuary unit and the 'issues in finance' unit.

if your looking at the finance industry, you're best bet would be to pick the 300 level finance units which have the ECON prefix, such as ECON335, ECON350, ECON360....
