You've been there a week OP calm down.

I made all of my friends in 2nd sem first year and we still hang out regularly outside and inside uni. I had acquaintances and people to sit with or whatever in 1st sem too but didn't meet anybody I really liked until the next semester so don't try to put some sort of time limit on when you should be making friends you'll only freak yourself out.
Take it day by day and have no expectations and you'll be much happier
Yeah I just have chaperones, that's about it. They're not really my type...

In the first few weeks of second semester you'll find people are a bit socially revamped for a short time period so you get a second shot at introducing yourself to people in a welcoming atmosphere
typically it's because people who made no friends & regretted staying quiet first sem etc. are temporarily determined to 'make it different this time'

But tbh you'll meet new people every semester, every year so even if you fail at 2nd sem it's not the end of the world
and you can always make friends with exchange students (americans are good fun) who are usually very happy to make locals friend that can hang out with them

anyway it'll be fine op

I really only started making friends in second year. Generally kept to myself most of first year but by the time I finished, I had a good group going.

From my point of view, the people i've met in lectures are good acquaintances however we don't have much in common apart from our course/career interests. The people i've gotten close to have been through the societies, having a similar interest is really good because you can actually socialise and share the same hobby.

I'd highly recommend you get involved in any societies that interest you, even if it isn't directly related to your uni. I know a society i'm involved in happily welcomes students from other unis.

I already have the #boscommcrew though so i haven't had the urge to introduce myself to a lot of people.

This is inspiring me to make friends.

Today I stood outside the lecture theatre like a loner waiting for it to start. Did not attempt to make friends, felt too tired.

Yes.

There are a lot of assholes and a lot of boring people and a lot of amazing ones too.

That goes for not just uni but the world.

I guess your circumstances are a bit different to the majority on here (due to your job), however i'm sure you'd bump into a few cadets in your lectures? That would be good for you seeing as you have something in common straight away, you can moan about work :haha:

lame excuse/10 (jks)

nah but srsly, I've learnt to be less basement. I usually make 3/4 friends/acquaintances per day. Also helps, with knowing who to pair with for group assessments.

I made friends with an international student today. :haha: She gave me her number.

But yeah - the process of making lecture/tute buddies is probably worth it in the end.

On a srs note, I just think she is trying to familarise herself with uni in a new country, which can be quite nerve wracking. Always good to get contacts just in case, you need help with anything. I saw on her on the weekend at camp anyway, so I kind of felt inclined to assist a fellow Hong Konger ease into uni.

Ah okay, that's cool.

I think yesterday on the train, there was an international student who I think was travelling home to her... exchange family (or whatever it's called), and they were talking to her, and doing that sort of stuff.

I've talked to people, but since my go-to line in " So you're trying to get into med too?" all we ever talk about is how to get into med, how awesome med is gonna be and what we wanna do when we graduate med. I might have missed a few med-related topics.

Yup my plan since day one. today was quite good, sat in between two girls after a basement shyed away from the empty seat.
I'll chuck you in my ELEC lectures and give you $5 if you can sit between two girls. I think that's actually how many you would find in the whole room.

But generally the closer friendships I have gotten from uni were from a society with people doing a course with me in semester 1 or something. Also, atm 90% of the people in first few weeks are meet once for an hour or so, talk to them a bit and not talk to again after a while. Or it could be a once in a week you see them or something.

Don't worry too much though as it will get better when you have some people doing the same programs and courses as you and you generally are all in the same lectures and tutes and labs (if you have them). I made friends with a few 3rd years who said their lecture has only about 50 people.

Most of my uni friends are either school friends, people that I met through those school friends, or people from clubs that I've joined. Engineering people all seem to be super introverted/not interested. =P

Seriously, you can make some of the best friends you'll make through clubs and societies. Definitely join a few if you're finding that you're surrounded by boring people. =P
