Answer to the following scenario is??? (1 Viewer)

Let's assume that I have got two dear friends (obviously imaginary). One friend goes to James Ruse Agricultural High School with other going to some random private high school.

Here is the scenario:

1. my dear James Ruse friend came first in his 2 Unit Mathematics at his school with 88% (obviously quite difficult) for his internal exams and 100% for his HSC (which is his external exam)
2. and my other friend also came first in his 2 Unit Mathematics at his school with 98% for his internal exams and 100% for his HSC
3. then, who gets the top rank in terms of whole Mathematics HSC?

Would it be James Ruse friend or other friend in some random private high school?

I guess my scenario was not detailed enough, I guess I will fix it a bit!

Here is my amended scenario:

1. my private high school friend absolutely ditched the 2nd guy who got 90% with 3rd guy getting 84%
2. for my dear James Ruse friend, the competition was absolutely crazy!! He had three people getting same mark with 4 people being second with 86%

Everything I wrote is imaginary and please don't take it seriously :uhhuh:

Thats assuming that they both got 100 in the external exam, and they both got the highest mark in their internal school assessment.

You are incorrect. It is the marks that count not the ranks. However I can see why you said what you said. Because it is the rankings and the relative differences between the students marks that matters. Not just the rankings.

Ok, let me re-phrase that, the ranks do count, but the following two scenario's are different and would most likely result in different moderated school assessment marks.

Scenario1:
Bob is 1st in cohort with an internal assessment mark of 95.
Sally is 2nd in cohort with an internal assessment mark of 80
John is 3rd in cohort with an internal assessment mark of 60

Scenario2:
Bob is 1st in cohort with an internal assessment mark of 95.
Sally is 2nd in cohort with an internal assessment mark of 61
John is 3rd in cohort with an internal assessment mark of 60

It is the marks that are submitted to the Office of teh Board of Studies, not the ranks.

Your reasoning seems sensible, but you're not totally correct.

Internal marks - do not count for your HSC. It is the ranks.

The Liason officer that spoke to our school explained it. Your scenario doesn't take into account the fact that....


Sally 1 is 2nd in cohort with an internal assessment mark of 80
Sally 2 is 2nd in cohort with an internal assessment mark of 61

Obv. Sally 1 is scored as 2nd. Sally 2 is scored as 2nd. But Sally 1 has done better.

However, does the BOS know if a school has increased everyone's mark by 10 because the top mark was only 85? No.

So when Sally 1 strolls into her external assessment, the only possible close-to-fair way of detemining untampered performance - lets say on this rare case she does exactly the same as Sally 2.

But, because her ranking is 2 and her cohort not as good, Sally 2's rank is not as hard to get as Sally 1s, because her cohort did better in the external examinations.

Aha! Says BOS. In fact, though Sally 2's rank is 2 and Sally 1's is 2 (you REALLY should have given these people different names) - they are not equal.

So, they scale Sally 2 down. Simple as that. They got the same marks; they got the same rank - but the rank wasn't an indicator UNTIL the rest of the cohort did the examination.
So, because the cohort was weaker for Sally 2 to compete against, her real ranking had nothing on Sally 2.

TLTR? Internal rankings, not marks, are taken into account along with your external mark. If your cohort does better, you all go up together. How much you do varies.
