According to people here, they said that you had to be at this forum for at lrast 3 years or have a postcount of 5000+ to get a custom subtitle, or premium.

how long ago did they say that? because when I inquired about it at the beginning of the year, this the answer I got from the mods.

You would have had to posted 2000+ posts or been a member for a year

Dunno about the period of time (~6-9 months?) but if you can get 3000+ posts, then you can change it.

In reference back to the thread... there's a lot you can do with a law degree that doesn't involve being a solicitor/barrister and working in criminal law.

Also, some of the smartest and dumbest people I've ever met have been solicitors.

Actually I don't think it's the money or some sort of irrepressible desire to be seen as a 'justice fighter'. Actually, I thnik its the prestige that attracts a lot of people; they want to do law merely because it sounds impressive to be like 'i'm doing law at Sydney". I notice with a lot of people to that they say they want to do law, yet they have no idea what being a lawyer actually entails. They typically have no clear direction either, just this vague 'i want to do law' mantra. If you actually ask half these aspiring lawyers, say, what area of law they want to specialise in, chances are they'll just look at you askance. It's almost like its trendy to be an aspiring lawyer. Same goes for medicine, there are loads of people who just think they want to do it. E.g. I have this friend who is dfeadset on doing med, despite the way i've pointed out the minor impediment that she can't stand the sight of blood, needles, and is getting mediocre grades.

As far as I know I want to work in criminal law, most likely as a prosecutor but that could all change.

People like your friend drive me nuts but often in law and it is probably the same in med they usually drop out by the end of the first year, often after the first semester.

Well all jobs have risks.

And before you go into court battle for your client, you would have evaluated his/her chances of winning/getting a good deal in terms of punishment and you would have been confident in winning.

Though if he/she gave you loads and loads of money... but that's another story!

Criminal law would be interesting, but would that entail any risk to your safety (eg. if you loose a case for your client)?

Yeah, its a little disconserting that their is a specific offence for assaulting/murdering a prosecutor or their family but meh...I'm tough...right...

I want to be a lawyer because unlike your lovely stereotype you displayed in your post, I don't find myself to be greedy and blood thirsty. I want to help those who get exploited by the entire world. I want to stop the injustices. And I want to change this mess of a world we are in.

Maybe if people like you didn't make sweeping generalisations then maybe we could fix things instead of catagorising everything and places it all into labelled boxes.

My Intro to Law academic said to us, "In many years to come when you have become bitter, twisted and cynical go and do some community legal work to remember why you started!"

Its true though 1 and a half years at uni and I am already cynical

well suprising to me. I see people one semester and then they vanish off to surround themselves in the "other part" of their double degree. Criminal law was a huge shock, before we completed more than 6 weeks at least 1 in 5 had unenrolled. I thought this was nuts - dunno how many will be left after we get our marks back??
