good point made by Riet. age of consent of 16 with a "close-in-age" clause for younger people. a system like this is used in other jurisdictions, such as in canada. at least it allows for younger teenagers to explore their sexuality, while protecting, say, a 14 yr old girl from a manipulative 18 year old predator.

16 is fine but a "within 2 years" rule for young people. E.g. 15 and 17 yr olds couple, sweet as bru, 17-14 nah not cool.

AFAIK the (nsw) legislation currently provides for a degree of flexibility regarding teens who are close in age and/or close to the cut-off. Had to research it once for one of my brothers.... hilarious story...

I think 16 is okay BUT...

The fact that it's 16, a 16 year old can legally fall pregnant. A 16 year old with a kid, can't sign a lease for an apartment. Can't vote for government. Still receives shit wages. It's confusing as fuck- "You can have a child, but you can't have an apartment!".

So in that instance I'd ask for it to be adjusted, or for the other laws to be adjusted.

In the case of mentally disabled individuals it would have to be looked at objectively, seeing as mentally, they can be much "younger".

+1. I just think that, since every other law says 18, it's more convenient for the age of consent to be raised to 18 than to lower the age for every other law to 16. Didn't read the rest of the thread, so maybe someone's mentioned this, but I don't get how you can have sex at 16 but not watch porn till you're 18.

boys legal consent age is 18 girls is 16 (think my brother threw that one in so i wouldn't go for the older man! haha protective sibling and all that!)
anyway fact or fiction?

im liking the no age but with age gap considerations however does that change with age? like you get parents with 10 year age gaps but as they're both fully developed its considered ok, though the same doesn't apply to teens?? there's a line somewhere..

Yeah they are both 16 now.

I think that 16 is good...we can have that as a 'rule of thumb' and look at things within that framework. At 16, you get other considerations legally as well, i.e. you pretty much get autonomy for legal or medical decisions.
