I'm in year 12 interested in the enginering/commerce double degree. I just want to ask if the aeronautical program starts first year if i do a double degree. The uac guide seems to suggest that you do the flexible program for the first year and then specialise afterwards. Is there a sample program i can look at? Thanks

You do the same subjects as regular aero except in first year you miss out on the two intro subjects one of which includes building a kit aeroplane instead doing Accounting. Also you can only get one major in commerce and you cannot have any elective in aero unless you want to come for an extra year or overload on most of your semesters.

You arent doing flexible yet you will do similar subjects to most people in stream A of flexible because the first year is common almost everywhere.

Differential Calculus
Accounting 1A
Engineering Computing
Intro to Aero

Sem 2:
Statistics
Integral Calulus and Modelling
Dynamics 1
Engineering Mechanics
Accounting 1B

Thanks. So if i do a double degree i can only do the core units? Is there a real advantage in doing commerce with aeronautical? I only want to do it because i heard it can improve job prospects and help with promotion to management positions.

Well since there are no jobs in Aus for Aeronautical I doubt that an australian commerce degree which teaches you about australias economy and finance would help you at all.

oO. are there literally no jobs or just difficult to get one? Mayb i'll combine it with arts since you're saying its useless. btw how does usyd aeronautical compare with the unsw one? unsw seems to have the better engineering faculty. Thanks

There are literally no jobs, when was the last time you saw aus do something in the aeronautical field? Oh and combining Aero with arts is silly. You can still do commerce that way u can get a job in a nice bank.

Many people forget the multitude of applications for aero grads. Think of control systems, exhaust systems, software engineering etc. Just type in aero in seek and you shall see that there are jobs for aero grads - at least more so than everyone says.

Those jobs aren't actually aero related and are much better suited for electrical for controls, mechanicals for exhaust and software for software. Only reason aeros are getting hired for it is because they can do it and there is severe shortage of the other engineers. Most people wanting to do aero want to actually work with planes.

Also I don't see exactly where in the course they would learn how to write code needed to engineer software.

Aeronautical/ Commerce starts in first year. Many subject like MATHS and COMPUTING are common but you would also be doing ACCOUNTING for the Commerce part and AEROSPACE DESIGN for the Aeronautical part.

as for there being a standard program for this .... I don't think I've seen one.

If you want a job in aero in Australia, talk to Boeing Australia, British Aerospace Australia, GKN, DSTO, Aerospace Engineers Australia, Turbomecca, Hawker Pacific,....... although with the global financial downturn jobs at present may be a bit difficult..... perhaps in 4 years it might be better.
