Advice on books for SOR (1 Viewer)

Ther are a couple of areas I didn't cover properly when we did them earlier this year (Hasadism in Judaism, Martin Luther and environmental ethics in Christianity). Basically, our textbook (living religion) is a bit vague in my opinion and doesn't cover the course in great depth. So our teacher gave us heaps of articles on the different units and we had questions to answer etc.

So in the upcoming holidays, i want to get some good sudy notes together for all the units in the course. My teacher recommended i get Spotlight HSC SOR, so i went to a bookstore today and they didn't have it. However, I did see a new excel study guide for SOR which looked quite good because it had notes for each dotpoint in the syllabus.

Could someone please advise me on which would be the better one to get. I kinda know the basic stuff but just need some decent materiual to get down some good study notes to prepare for the trials.

I personally think both books would be quite ordinary (I will admit I have not seen t he new excel but if past versions are any indication.......spotlight is OK but nothing special)

I would recommend the Macquarie SOR book as it also covers all the points 'point by point' and is actually written by someone who knows what they are talking about!!!

There is another book (whose name escapes me at the moment -it has a group of kids on the front forming a human pyramid!!) which is also quite good as well as most of its content is in tabular form

But Macquarie is the best IMHO

sor is such a hard subject to good textbooks for, because of the sheer diversity of the course. i also have the living religion book but rarely use it. i recommend that you borrow the excel/macquarie books from the library instead of or before buying them because they may not cover your specific topic. for example in a dot point about a significant person in a religion they may talk about one person but not the one you studied. therefore useless.

Thankyou for your reply. I already have the Macquarie revision guide for SOR.

Do u think this book has the depth of information required by the syllabus? So it would be OK just to summarise from it and maybe get scripture refernces and stuff on variants from other sources.

we have living religions from the library but i rarely use it. my teacher has a variety of books (including excel, macquarie, some unknowns) and photocopies their specific parts on a topic (amazing how different they are, hence you can't rely on one) i personally like spotlight the best.

i suggest you borrow them, and photocopy anything of relevence, because the majority will not apply to your topics

The other book I was talking about (tabular form) is called "Leading Edge" (I think...am not at school atm obviously!)

Would u say a combination of spotlight and Macquarie is good enough (I do 1 unit SOR btw)?

i suggest you borrow them, and photocopy anything of relevence, because the majority will not apply to your topics

lol holly, i dont think encouraging our teacher to give us multiple photocopies is a good thing

but yeah all books are fairly vague, i personally dont use them at let wikipedia tell me what to know and yes yes i know its not reliable which is why i often refer to encycolpedias

The new excel is fabulous!!

Spotlight is actually releasing a new SOR study guide for 2 unit due out next month or so!! It should be good!

and maq is alright not that fab!

Living religion is very vague, use the net and research as much as you can on topics to find out the depth of the units you do!

Cambridge has recently released a new book which is bloody brilliant!!!

Very detailed, up to date references and it comes with a CD version to sve you lugging a book around....
