Advice for writing a Journeys essay (1 Viewer)

Got my trial paper 1 tomorrow. Jus want to query a few things:

1. Abbreviations: In the half yearly for my journey essay, I used stuff like "IACS 1951" for "Immigrants at Central Station, 1951". It specifically says in the markers comments not to use these sort of abbreviations. Just wondering if there is a "correct" way of doing it, or is it best to write the whole damn title?

2. Identifying texts and related texts: Should u do it like this, "Migrant Hostel" from Peter Skrzynecki's Immigrant Chronicle? And one of my RM is Jeffrey Smart's book Retrospective, which is a collection of paintings. Should I have the name of the painting in inverted commas and the title of the book underlined? E.g, "The Underpass" from Jeffrey Smart's Retrospective.

I'd appreciate it if someone could clear this up

Hey,

I know it's very tempting to abbreviate words and titles but unfortunately for English there are only so many things that can be abbreviated like you are not allowed to say eg. you have to use ie.
Anyway in my last exam I tried to abbreviate physical journeys into phys. jour. and that didn't go down well. There is no right way for the titles either so it's better to write the whole thing! Annoying I know!
You're right with the book of paintings though- underline the name of the book and have the name of the painting in inverted commas.

it is a well known practice in the hsc to abbreviate titles of well known texts, such as rosencrantz and gildernstern are dead. We did it like this:

"In this essay, we shall explore the themes of existentialism and etc etc from the text Rosencrantz and Guildernstern are Dead (RAGAD)."

i just refer to the poem at skrzynecki's "Migrant Hostel" (I'm pretty sure you can assume the marker knows that it's from the Immigrant Chronicles............)

we can do that? i was told we couldnt
and when we say their names, can we just say ros and guil?

if you read the past essays written by band 5/6 students, you will see that happen. But it could be your schools policy. The key is: if you have spelt out clearly what your abbreviation stands for, there shouldn't be any reason for people to complain

Actually, no this practice is not advised and (as identified by the OP) is specifically addressed in many past Marker's Comments. I've marked many students down in the past because of this. Even though students can still score band 6 by using acronyms (i had one last year who did so, against my advice) the impression mark may be significant if your essay is in the borderline range.

Instead of using acronyms though, shortening down the titles (and using ellipsis) is fine.

So for eg you can use Ros&Guil for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, or just Red Sea for Crossing the Red Sea. This applies also for related texts but you should reference this in your intro ie Gondry's film Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind (Eternal...)
