I've been offered a place in Advanced English.
At first, I chose standard because I planned to be a more mathematics/science based student, and thought advanced might consume more time which I'd rather be spending on studying mathematics/science.

I topped standard by quite a large gap, and my teacher thinks I should be doing advanced instead of wasting my time in standard.

In terms of the HSC, I think I remember reading somewhere that standard and advanced scale similarly, just the general cohort who do standard don't perform as well as advanced students, therefore the lack of band 6's?

If that's the case, should I stay in standard and aim high or take up the offer and move up to advanced?

The students in advanced are very good at what they do. Most of them are very humanity-based, and I know that I'd get into top 10 at max.

Thank you in advance.

i personally would go for advanced... i had one girl at my school who was in your exact position - did all the maths and sciences and sort of had no interest in spending time on english - and don't get me wrong, she did very well even with standard, but she would have been dux of our school for sure if she had done advanced. there's greater chance of standard english pulling your atar down than with most other subjects, imo, just because so very few band 6's get handed out.

Do advanced. Easier to crack a 90.
Looking at your sig, you got quite a great ATAR whilst doing standard. Do you rekon you would have done even better in advanced? Great ATAR btw.

Well, the highest HSC mark in the Advanced class at my school was a mere 84 where as highest in Standard was 92 followed by an 86. And seeing as they scale (contribute to your ATAR) identically then standard aren't exactly disadvantaged. I do believe, however, that I would have performed better in Advanced although Advanced is not as straight forward as Standard. If you want the easy way out (Standard) you have to get an average of 14/15 and 18/20 if you want to have a shot at a 90. Also, Standard is no where near as time consuming as advanced so you get time for other subjects.

p.s. What's your ATAR aim, by the way?

EDIT: For the record, less than 0.2% of the Standard cohort managed a band 6 this year. You can see how quite unlikely it is to crack a 90.
EDIT2: I can see how my post is filled with mixed sentiments. I am merely providing cons and pros for each so you have the ultimate decision.

I would go for advanced. You can always drop down right?

Personally, I spent less time on English (advanced) than any other subject. Not that I would recommend doing that at all...
But just saying that I don't think advanced has to particularly time consuming at all.

I'm aiming for high 90's for medicine.
Definitely definitely definitely do advanced.
You're right in what you say up the top.

It's so much easier to get a band 6 in advanced . It doesn't matter if you're a maths/science person. Our school (and I assume the highly ranked schools are like this) didn't even offer standard because trust me, advanced is not that much harder and if you're wanting to get in the high 90's, it will be very difficult.

Definitely take Advanced. I took Standard and now I regret the decision; I could have done so much better in the other class.

Oh geez, I'm beginning to regret brushing off my offer now (I had a "oh well, not interested" tone when I was offered).

I wonder if I can ask my way up to advanced S:

The advanced and standard course are different. If you drop, you have to re-learn different text.
To OP, if you have potential to do well in advanced then you might as well.

Do Advanced - IMO, the teachers and other Advanced students push you further (to get a better mark) than in a Standard class. In Standard, you probably won't be challenged much and you may end up being lazy and sitting on a "great" mark.
