Advanced English Essay Marking Process.. (1 Viewer)

Hi, i'd just like to know how our essays are marked.
Like what process do they go through etc etc.

3 teachers mark the question then they results are averaged.

If there is big difference in marks, say 12, 18,20, they come together and the essay is discussed

the process is very fair

my teacher is a senior marker and this is what she said.
1) the senior markers mark a few exams to set what needs to be written to achieve particular bands. they pull exams out of the pile at random and mark them
2) the markers then sit down and mark the papers. this happens twice (ie, your paper is marked by 2 different people)
3) if the mark has a difference greater than 3 then a senior marker marks it.

Do you get the average of the two markers' marks if they are different? Like if you get 13, then 15, your overall mark is 14?

And also, do they mark Paper one standard and advanced all together, so they dont know if you were standard or advanced? Or are they seperated?

im guessing that if there is less than 3 marks separating your scores then you will get the average of the two.
and i think they would mark sections one and two together, but keep in mind that advanced and standard do different texts for AOS, so im pretty sure they would be able to tell based on your texts.
and unless you are the best standard student ever seen, or the worst advanced, they could probably tell by the style of your writing

oh ok.. is it true that they use last years exemplar responses in marking?

i wouldn't really have a clue, but the *ahem* exemplar responses, imho, aren't too flash.

This is from memory...

For AOS:
Section 1 is marked by 1 marker with strict guidelines.
Section 2,3 are marked by 2 markers who have no knowledge who the other marker is or the mark given. The average is taken. If the disparity is really really huge (at least 5 marks out of the 15), a senior marker is employed. And again with strict guidelines.

For Modules:
The process is the same as for Section 2,3 of AOS.

Paper 1 is marked indiscriminantly, ie. the markers don't know what type of Candidate you are. (Of course, if they are marking Section III, they'd know based on text, but otherwise, they should not know based on Section I,II.)

Just to clarify something, as a final note. The exemplar responses from last year managed to satisfy the strict guidelines (or at least managed to convince the markers they did), and that's what you (Class of 2003) should've been working towards.

Just to clarify when the markers have differed by more than 3 marks for the same paper, the senior marker then marks the paper. They can then refer it to another senior marker if they are unsure.
