Just wondering if anyone would recommend UWS for the Advanced Bus. Leadership. I've been offered a scholarship to go there, but the image of the university concerns me. I know the course is the same as any other uni in terms of quality (so don't attack me on this point) and such but some teachers have told me it may limit my promotional opportunities in the future.

Also, is there much difference between a commerce degree at USYD and Maq - I'd love to go to USYD but travel is an issue - one and a half hours each way. Would I be better off just going to USYD instead of UWS and paying for my degree considering my parents are have already agreed to pay my HECS?

Ahh, so confused, as the numerous questions suggests. :uhoh:

Any contribution would be greatly appreciated.

What are you thinking of majoring in?

Also, business leadership sounds a bit crap, imo. You learn theories of leadership in many other courses.

Yeah, i'm thinking the same thing, it sounds like a glorified course that doesn't really get you anywhere and you have to do 19 different subjects, many of which I'm not interested in without any key specialisation before you actually major in anything.

I'm was thinking of majoring in accounting but people are telling me it's very maths based, and believe me, i'm certainly the mathematically challenged type.

Maybe commercial law and management, since at the moment all my subjects are english based. I thought about doing a law degree but I hear you have to be pretty aggressive and extremely outgoing. The careers adviser suggested marketing or int bus.

I'm really am quite indecisive

ahaha...there there.
WELL, from your earlier comment about needing to be assertive, etc about being corporate lawyer - they're all skills you can hone and mature. So yeah...
I'm planning on doing BBus and B laws at UTS :D

Yes, I think law would be very stressful, though I suppose any course at uni isn't exactly easy- good luck to you with that!

Maybe a Bachelor of Commerce (Liberal Studies) is an option, although I'd be scraping the barrel in terms of my UAI there. Or even a B of Economic and Social Studies.

I should probably concentrate on picking a uni first, lol. I keep going to these open days and the little marketers use all of their persuasive charm to sway me to their courses, damn it! There are too many options

What do you want to work as?

You've so far talked about completely different career paths

Accounting vs. Law vs. Marketing vs. Being a stay at home mum.

Okay, the stay at home mum is just offensive. Well ideally I would love to be a researcher in some sort of field (left field once again) but employment is limited.

I was dead set on being an accountant with a commercial law major until my careers advisor talked me out of it the other day, so maybe I should just choose a commerce degree where you do everything in the first year and then decide your majors second year. I could probably cope with the maths, the funny thing is I was actually quite good at maths before I chose to do general, quite sad actually.

Would you have any idea whether macquarie or sydney would be better, both in terms of education and social life?

Wait, if you're dead set on being an accountant, then be an accountant. Also accounting maths = quite easy. Although I only did first year accounting units, it was very easy maths, considering I didn't even do maths for my HSC

USYD = a more prestigious uni in many fields. social life is also brilliant
MAQ = an awesome social life, but only if you live on campus

I would guess that USYD has better employment prospects too.

And why is being a stay at home mum offensive? I don't see why the choice of some women is so offensive. Sexist.

I think I'll just go for the commerce degree then, and that way I can do commercial law too. Now I just have to decide between universities I suppose, a little bit easier but nonetheless difficult considering at UWS they are offering me twenty thousand to do that leadership course. I suppose in the long term USYD or Maquarie would be better. Thanks for the help by the way!

Why do you want to major in commercial law? What employment prospects would that give you?

Well, I suppose it complements the accounting major in terms of taxation law and such. I might end up doing something else after I've done all the disciplines first year. I guess I'll have to wait and study my little butt off. If i amaze myself I might even get into Liberal Studies! (crosses fingers and wishes for genie to miraculously appear)

In order to be eligible for the CA program, most (if not all) accounting majors do a Business/Commercial Law minor (or in this case, major) to satisfy subject pre-reqs.

I can't really imagine any one doing it for any other reason -_-

I'd rather be a stay-at-home Mum than an accountant! I don't see what's offensive about it...?

But seriously, law isn't really that stressful. In terms of studying law, it's all about being able to reason and write clearly. A strong grasp of language is certainly beneficial. I'm a commerce/law student and I found accounting to be extremely boring, although I never did more than the first-year core subjects.

Rather than speaking to careers counsellors, try speaking to uni students in the fields you're interested in, so you can get a feel for the sort of subjects and work you'll be doing.

Well, I'm going to maq open day so I'll ask a few questions there, though if I'm going to do law I think I might consider UWS instead. MY best subject is english so I might as well utilise my skills in the area. I've heard its pretty good and they've won quite a few awards.

I'm just worried about not being able to think quickly enough on the spot with all the pressure. lol, my mum doesn't want me to do law because she thinks i'm going to get shot at the courts in the process. oh the choices.

What do you do in law anyway, besides the stereotype of reading lots of heavy books?

as has beens said numerous times, UWS law is even better than Harvard law. You are incredibly employable.

I really don't think I'll get the 99.55 or whatever it is that is needed for USYD, maybe a 94-97 I'm estimating. Besides, if I have a scholarship at UWS why not go there? Also, the travel time is about an hour less.

because you'll get rolled by lebs every time you're on campus. calculate it. you're on campus 4 times a week. you have $20 on you each day. 4 by 20 = $80. 26 semester weeks year = $2,080/year.

there's a chunk of your scholarship money gone
