Hey i am likely to apply for commerce at unsw and major in actuarial studies. Originally i also wanted to major in finance, but lately ive been thinking about doing a double degree with science and major in mathematics. Is doing this helpful? Are their concepts that may overlap or is it a waste of a major and do i have better career options doing finance with actuarial studies? I want to do maths at uni cos im enjoying 4u maths at school, perhaps the work is in different style though. Any help would be appreciated.

Best advice? Go ask on open day. You've got plenty of time to decide :)

if you enjoy the maths and would freely pursue the subject matter on your own, then i'd would recommend it, otherwise, dont touch it because it will be alot harder than 4 unit...

also i think finance is clearly the most popular co-major with actuarial studies

i reckon finance isnt that really that good with actuarial. is there a point learning basically the same finance theory over and over again???

should do something unrelated to actuarial but is complementary. eg software engineering or information systems

underthebridge you'll have plenty of time to decide what you want to do once you get into the course
just choose commerce/science first off because it's easier to drop the science part than to pick it up

you don't have to pick your majors once you start, you don't even have to until you get to near the end of first year and going into second year

Yay for maths!

From what I can gather it's, probably the most adaptable and helpful major you can take at uni. It'll definitely help you whether you go into law, medicine, science, commerce...

u have to do qma as its the prereq for qmb. u should just continue with math1151 as its a "higher" subject, ull get scaled so dw worry too much till u finish the course.

u declare ur major at the beginning of 2nd yr.

maths is good IMO. and u can always switch to finance/maths in commerce/science.

actl1001 drove me away from actl. i dont think sachi will b ur lecturer for actl1001 for this yr as i heard hes taking another 3rd yr actl subject (u lucky bastards! :D) but dont quote me on it. sachi's assessments are quite difficult. one of our assignment qs was later discovered to have come from the Putnam maths competition paper (the one where the mean result is 1/100).
