From what I know, Accounting is boring shit. But it pays well, so there you go. BTW, UNSW has a few co-op Accounting scholarships available right now.
its not the boring, i think finance is even worse with bit more maths involved. accounting is very logical which is gud cos basically it means you can only one answer. but then in second year and third year - they go into ethics morals etc. so it changes and depending on your subjects that you choose, i wouldnt say it is boring. Especially when you compare to economics.

Why would people despise those who do Acct?
Well lets face it, as much as some of us who like studying accounting it still gets really tedious. Not to mention all the rumours that circulate around accountants for decades, for example: accountants have no personality, anti-socials, nerds with big glasses etc...

But in my opinion, accounting ranks as one of the more interesting commerce fields compared to the likes of economics, finance, actuary etc...

Does anyone have an idea of how hard it is to get one of these? What kind of UAI and co curricular commitments combination would be competitive? Do you know if many people are applying for it?

You'd best be asking someone who's actually on the Accounting coop... there's quite a lot of them around UNSW from our year... off the top of my head I can think of Yajing, David, Jess and Marianne who are all acct coops.

As for what you need- try looking on the scholarship websites or if you still have it, the books from last year that they handed out advertising the coop program. Basically a 95+ UAI was needed (if I recall correctly), and a decent amount of non-academic involvement- but this is purely stuff which I remember hearing from existing coop people and isn't to be mistaken for 'fact'.

Cheers.
Btw there are a few ppl on the unswcomsoc forums talking about applying for it- but don't really know how many people total are applying? There's only a few spots isn't there for the new sponsors?

Good luck!

which is harder to u, accounting or economics?
For me it's easily economics only because I have zero interest in it and tend to fall behind through lack of motivation...

compared to what? you're deluded if you think any commerce area is fun
Actually marketing is quite fun only because it's piss easy and requires u to do little to no work, I would probably be doing marketing if there were better job prospects. Plus it requires u to be really outgoing and fake, that's why so many people settle in being a humble accountant...:)

I'm sorry, but how can you say that?

I was at a Big 4 Firm recently over summer and was rotated through Audit and Marketing. Audit was boring shit, but so was marketing. At least with Audit, you're compensated with 6 and 7 figure salaries after 5 or so years, and get to go to various companies for field work, even for vac students. Marketing's not bloody designing advertising brochures, its pretty much admin with a whole heap of back breaking work. They also have their own number crunching to do as well. The good thing I'll say about Marketing is the staff in there are usually much better looking.

By nature, no job is not boring, sorry for the crude example, but even if you're a pornstar or something, true the first few times are good, but after you're 5000th movie I'm sure you'll start to get over it

EDIT: I remember that the whole Marketing Dept had to come in on a Sunday to do work during the time I was there as well.
Basically, its a generalisation Marketing is for bludgers

As for the Accountant not being outgoing bit, have you heard of bloody Public Practice? Its client orientated. Basically, by your definition, being a lawyer is not outgoing since the two professions are almost identically structured.

I like how ur trying to defend accountants and stuff but in all reality, we know that for the majority of accounting graduates, say for every 10 graduates, 8 of which would be those shy, quiet and introverted types, while the other 2 are what u would term as "accountants gone wrong" types which sort of evens out because you'll always find exceptions in any facet of life.

Also u don't have to be particularly outgoing to be able to communicate to ur clients in a profession like accounting since what u mostly do is deal with facts and figures rather than any form of persuasion...

The vast majority of people I know that have been accepted into positions at accounting firms have a personality.

Also, every single graduate I have spoken to at information evening and assessment centers have not been shy or quiet.

I am talking about the people who get somewhere, ie work for a decent accounting firm. Maybe you are basing your assumptions on people that are studying accounting at uni?

Majority of accountants don't just deal with numbers. You need to have collaborative and interpersonal skills. You will be always working in a team and often dealing with difficult clients. You cannot be a shy or quiet individual in such situations at all.

I have NO idea what you are talking about.

Are you sure you don't mean Law?

Redrum is right.

I am not defending them at all, in actual fact I like the nerdy accountants because they give the appearance of diligence and competence. You should see some of the lot that Pwc or EY (for example, nothing against those firms) and other firms employ, they're like a bunch of bogans who go for drinks during lunch and after work like every single day. they were bloody pink shirts and you ask them about accounting and they have no idea whats going on

Out of the ppl I know who got cadetships/grad spots... they've all got a lot of character and seem to defy the stereotype of "boring accountant".

accounting can be repetitous and uncreative but i don't know if i'd go so far to call it boring
imo accounting is best combined with something you're more passionate about, be that an arts, science, or law degree, or some other major in commerce
accountants will always be in demand, the job pays pretty well and an accounting degree is something you have to fall back on in life, even if it is not your first passion
people who pursue accounting as their first career choice are usually competitive, driven people who want to get to the top of the corporate ladder and who (i'm sure many of them will indeed admit) are primarily motivated by money. i don't think it's possible to have a true passion for accounting

LOL I'm not sure how true that is in terms of Big4, but there may be an element of truth to that when it comes to Commerce electives!
