Accounting v Finance Major (1 Viewer)

being a combined-degree student, i only have one commerce major to play with and i need to select now... the ones on my mind at the moment are Accounting and Finance...

i know a little about what Accounting is (having done the equivalent of Acct1A and been to a few ICAA events) but what the hell is Finance, what does it involve and what are the job prospects like?

representatives for both camps are kindly invited to pimp their major below

since ive gathered that u r doing comm/law, y do accounting and be a "dual" professional for? although it is a safe route, the law degree will always take precedence. completing a major in finance will give u the necessary challenge and opportunity to apply your problem solving skills, especially quantitatively (a weakness for accountants LOL). ive heard good reports that finance/law is the best way to get into IB. personally, i prefer more quantitative finance but the heavy workload associated with comm/law is perceived as a rite of passage for future IBers with their 80 hrs wks.

2cents from a commerce/science (finance & mathaematics) 2nd yr student as of this yr.

Anyway - Accounting makes you a more well rounded business professional. Finance really only deals with investment banking and that side of business, but Accounting is broader, allowing you to specialise in more diverse fields.

Obviously this'll all be irrelevant if you go on to become a lawyer, but an Accounting background is an advantage for a commercial lawyer, as Accounting exposes you to corporate governance, internal control and the workings/hierachy of corporations.

sorry this isnt related to this thread BUT, i need to make sure that: if you are a combined student doing commerce, you can only do ONE major?
is dis the same as EConomics as well?

In Commerce/Law and Commerce/Science yes.

In Commerce/Arts and Commerce/Social Science no, you can do two.

What is that suppose to mean?

For me :
accounting 1a assesment ; given various scenarios and to comment on them,
e.g, expenses regarding long service leave, is upgrading your accounting computer package an asset or expense. You work in a company handling the cash, and accounting books, and have been accused of falsifying the records and stealing money, write a letter to your employer of ur innocence and steps to be taken to avoid this situation occuring elsewhere.

accounting 1b assesment ; we were in a group, were we had to imagine we had a chartered accounting firm and had to report to the creditors of one.tel, about one.tels negligance, financial repercussions, etc.

i would definately say so, or business law and accounting.

You do the first 6 core subjects, but, its good to have the major/s in mind, so you can choose 2 other subs that will compliment the major you wanna do. I think.

In accounting, I know people who have double majored it with finance, bus law, eco and marketing. They all scored jobs easily and are really pleased with their subject choices. Business Law is a useful and valuable Co-major with Accounting. They are very highly sought after, particularly in Transaction Services and Tax in Big4 firms.
