My partner and I have already discussed this, but when we try to have kids, if the pregnancy shows down syndrome or some other serious condition, we would terminate immediately. Quite frankly, its a burden to the family in every way for a person that is unlikely to participate in life. The person will also then have to endure the eventuality of being placed into a home, to be cared for by underpaid and underqualified staff. Pass.
I think you are quite literally the smartest mod on this forum

but how is it a child if it is not born yet? and how does being sentient change your opinion? bc legally infanticide is after they have been born so you can't even call abortion after 20 weeks infanticide

and if you say the fetus can survive outside the womb at that point how would you be able to determine that medically, considering there are complications to delivering a fetus that early? here is my source
i just don't think its morally correct lol?
its unlikely to survive without certain medical equipment, but it still has a fair chance of survival atp... so do you think the same thing applies to people who are comatosed? they often can't survive without medical treatment....
being sentient changes my opinion because its a living thing with thoughts and feelings (whether that be physical/emotional) it just isn't right IN MY OPINION

Why on earth are you assuming that ppl with Down syndrome cannot eat, walk, talk, work, contribute to society, learn. ???
as someone who has family members with Down syndrome, this couldn’t be further than the truth. No they won’t need to be placed into a home, no it’s not a burden on my family.
Down Syndrome is a spectrum, some people can function in society, but quite a few cant. Why take that risk when you can terminate the pregnancy and start again.

Agreed - what if a woman if pregnant with a female bundle of cells instead of a strong boy who will grow up to bring honour to his family? Now what are they supposed to do? Accept a useless daughter??
Oh yeah I remember how this actually happened- that women would abort if they were expecting a girl under the one-child policy in China. Is this a reference to that?

Here's a few scenarios:
1. As a young women (a minor) you have dreams, but you get sexually asulted/raped and got pregnant. The child wasn't born out of love, you would have to give up ur dreams if you go through with it. But NO you HAVE TO give birth because it's a crime to not to, so fcking give up on ur dreams and goals. Everytime you look at ur child you'll get ptsd of that one guy who put you through torture
2. After a medical assessment --> you find out that if you give birth you will die. But NO you have to die, because ur child's life is more important than you. (obv this is to the mothers choice atm, whether they'd want to go through with it or not)
3. oH My GoSH, the child could've become the next influential person. twat what abt you? why aren't you the fcking president? and what abt the mothers dreams and life? she could've been an influential person.
4. Once you had gotten pregnant you find out that the child has a health issue. You are financially/mentally unstable, meaning as a parent you will not be able to pay attention to the child as money is important to survive, unable to give them love and care... (continue to 5th scenario)
5. Have you ever heard the saying all children deserve parents but not all parents deserve children? if the parent is a drug addicts/have mental/physical issues, knows that they will not be able to take care of their child, do they still have to give birth? You wouldn't want the child to go through stuff like that would you, growing up and basically raising themselves (especially if they have health issues not in their control). I doubt you would want to go through that too.

-----Oh but you could just give them up to adoption/foster care
  • Within the first year of children leaving foster care (thehomestretch.org.au)
    • 30% are homeless
    • 46% of boys and 22% of girls are in the criminal justice system
    • 54% have mental health issues
    • 30% are unemployed
    • 17% are pregnant during adolescence
Basically according to the the 5th point ---> for a fifth of the fostered children the cycle could just repeat over again.

Hence I think parents should have the choice. But If religious wise you want to follow certain methods then go for it! just don't force other people into it.

i can understand but you do understand that not everyone will feel the same right? not everyone will see a child with down syndrome as a burden and want to abort them and not everyone with children with down syndrome/life threatening illnesses will be placed into a home, they could have other children or extended family that can take care of them as well? you are pretty much applying the worst case scenario to every single case and to other people's lives as well.

you don't know for sure that parents of ill children or children reliant on the parents for life are "enduring" their children. i personally know someone with a child with an intellectual disability that needs constant attention and support in most ways, and they would be horrified to hear their child being called a burden on the family. you can think whatever you want but once you make the conscious choice to have the child and keep them you accept with that the responsibility of care for as long as you are able, and passing on that responsibility someone after that, whether that be another caretaker or else. it is not seen as a burden, it is seen as responsibility. if you are not able to see an ill child that way that's your opinion

its nobody's business what you choose but the stuff about "its a burden on the family in every way" is problematic bc it perpetuates a slippery slope fallacy and supports disgusting people with disgusting arguments like "people with down syndrome don't deserve to live, they should all be aborted bc they are a burden on the family/government" even if that is not your intention. and bc you worded that last part as "its a burden to the family" vs "i think its will be a burden on my family", it sounds less general and allows for your words to be misconstrued. im not saying you can't say any of that im saying make sure you word it so ppl don't interpret it and take it as a sign to start spewing hate and offensive messaging on this site
wtf its a personal opinion why are you getting so heated over someone saying they would abort their child if they had down syndrome or something, if you don't agree then dont abort but why cant they??

ok thats pretty harsh hahaha

i just dont want my kid to endure all of the shit that comes from having down syndrome or a serious serious disability, like what a horrible life they would live, why would i willingly want to have my kid be put into that life just for him to literally just suffer in every way possible
