Yes, that method is completely valid in the exams. It is taught in the Extension 2 syllabus, which means you definitely are allowed to use it in Extension 1 exams.

Try this one:
Given the polynomial f(x)=x^3+2x+1, find the polynomial whose roots are the square of those of f(x).

For reference, the answer is: f(x)=x^3+4x^2+4x-1
