Hi guys,

I'm currently in year 12 and I just had my first HSC assessment. I got 90+ for English and Advanced Maths, but 70-80s for Bio, Chem and Physics. So I was just wondering, if I aced my half yearlies, trials and the real HSC, is it still possible to get 96+ atar?

Btw, my school rank is 54.

You can't really get an accurate estimate using school marks as every school marks differently. A better indication would be your actual ranks in each subject.

Drifting is right, it's pretty much impossible to estimate off school marks. Those marks do look pretty good though and your school rank is good so i'd say 96+ is definitely possible but im making assumptions about the marking standards and difficulty of the assesments - ranks would help. Either way it's early days for you at the moment, it doesn't look like the assemsments you just did will hold you back at all so anything is possible!

May I know what ranks I need to get for a 96+ atar?

Theres not a definite number, depends on the subjects and how many people are in the cohort and it would still be a complete estimate.

If you tell us your subjects and cohort sizes of each subject then we can estimate what ranks you should aim for for a 96+.

You have to remember that even if you come first in all your subjects, if you bomb out in the exams and get really low scores, you won't get a 96 ATAR. There's no set of rank requirements needed, but the chances of a better ATAR are increased as you rank higher. At the end of the day, it's how you and your cohort performs in the HSC exams which matter, not your rank. If you all perform well then you will all get reasonably good ATARs (hence why even lowly ranked students in top schools can get 98+ ATARs).

So basically, the first HSC assessment isn't going to have a big impact on final atar? Is that right?

It contributes ofcoruse, but it's not going to make a massive difference unless you are aiming for top ranks and a very high atar.

It may or may not. The BOS sends your moderated assessment mark and your raw HSC exam mark to UAC to determine your ATAR. Your moderated assessment mark is determined through your school performance and how well your cohort performs in the HSC exams relative to the state. Your school performance is a measure of how well you performed relative to other students. It will have a big impact if it will majorly affect your moderated assessment mark. Otherwise, it will have minimal affect. But we can't tell if it will affect your moderated assessment mark until you've sat your HSC exams. There's no point worrying about it though, you can't really do anything about it except do as well as you can in the HSC exams.

Depends on the weighting. My first MX1 and MX2 assessments weighed a whopping 40% and if I messed that up, that would have obviously destroyed my internal marks hence essentially decreasing my chances of attaining a higher ATAR. But usually the first HSC assessments are low in weighting ie. 10-15%.
