-Studies show public school students perform better at uni?

Basically its because the private school kids have been 'spoon-fed' and are not used to working independently. Unlike the public school kids who are used to working hard as they have to make do with inferior resources, teachering, etc and are forced to do a lot of work by themselves.

As university is more like this, the public school kids are used to it so they have no trouble adapting. A lot more private school kids drop out of uni courses because of the shock of the change.

Also, public school more accurately represents the real world as there is a greater diversity of cultures, socio economic groups, etc, so are better equipped to deal with it.

Yeah, thats just what I have heard.

Studies have been done by Monash (?) university which show that while private school students might get a good university entrance rank (UAI, ENTER etc), they're more likely to fail university and more likely to drop out of university than a student from a public school.

They think this is due to private school students, especially those from exclusive schools, not knowing how to study independently enough for the tertiary level because they're forced fed their stuff.

Force feeding is a good way to get students to do well at school, but it is no way to train someone for university study. At university you get given your assignments at the beginning of the semester and that is pretty much the last time you hear about them. It is up to you to do it, and it is up to you to do the research for it.

The above articles are quite good. So next time a private school student tells you they're better, just remind them that they're more likely to fail university.

*the campuses
*the small year group
*the fact that not many people strive for academic success (easier to get top marks) and helps you to stand out
*a lot of the teachers actually care about you and how your going
*- give this to an extra dislike: a lot of the teachers aren't enthusiastic about the subjects they teach; especially the science teachers-it makes it really hard to learn and remember things

5 things I dislike;
*sporting carnivals and public speaking are compulsory
*the principal thinks he's too good for the school and completely ignores anyone who doesn't play rugby
*the school only cares about rugby and cricket
*the school has it's favourites
*the canteen- food was yuk

DiSlIkEs
1. the hole in the floor, where if you move back you suddenly realise that the hole in the floor has swallowed ypur chair and you go *bang!* (could be quite amusing, neva happened to me though!)
2. only have 3 working toilets for 350 girls
3. dodgy and incompetant teachers - annoys me so much
4. lack of money for equipment or really old wack up equipment that doesn't work, so we normally end up doing thought exps (gedankens)
5. lack of air conn
6. the year below us<O</O
7. the slowness of everything we only just finished prelim maths in term 1 of the HSC, 2 weeks ago we got our yr 11 report cards, halfway through yr 11 we got our yr 10 shirts...*rants on*<O</O

1. Senior privedges (i cant spell)
2. Really good teachers who know what they're talking about.
3. Having lockers
4. Having good services (careers room) and heaps of extra curricular activities to get in to.
5. Recess and lunch

Dislikes:
1. Retards in the grade below us (they called our grade frigets!) and the year below them.
2. How one house always wins our swimming, athletics n cross country carnivals every year.
3. Fire drills that go off in classes! Grrr.
4. Gym needs to have some air circulation inside.
5. Amount of cockaroaches in the fire stair well.

1. My school's grounds (like a huge nature reserve)
2. Being able to live in a boarding house full of decent people
3. Having great teachers during my HSC year
4. Having split units, dvd players and ceiling projectors in most of my classrooms
5. Unfiltered wireless internet set up by my friend in the boarding house (that was until the IT department found out...)

Dislikes
1. My school in general...
2. The majority of dumbfuck rurals I had to go to school with
3. The majority of dayboy scum I had to go to school with
4. My headmaster (media slut...) who will do anything to have his face on tv or the paper (Once I got off a 7 hour flight in bangkok, went to the hotel across the street, got in my hotel room, turned on the tv and lo and behold, there was my headmaster talking about the government's funding of private schools)
5. The emphasis my school has put on leadership by forcing all its students to pay for the headmaster's 'learning leadership' books which were completely useless as nobody read them...

Dislikes:
- No lockers for seniors (and as much as we whinge and whatnot, they still don't put them in)
- Got rid of our awesome yr 9 coordinator (who liked me) and gave us a patronising one (who doesnt like me) who doesnt listen to our suggestions and has favorites
- barely any trees! no shade in summer apart from one of those covered area thingos
- doesn't have its priorities right; seems to care more for image than education
- bulky bulky blazers

Likes:
- Some awesome teachers
- Easy to get into top classes (ie. slack grade... or is that a bad thing?)
- Early bus home
- Across the road from the beach
- Well-equipped; good computers etc

Like:

1. Close to home
2. There is enough n00bs in my school to own
3. Behaviour of students ironically is slightly better than at my previous school, even though it was part-selective.

Dislike:

1. Poor school
2. Not enough asian students of the opposite gender
3. Didn't get to study Biology
4. Hang out place is shit
5. *

Firstly, don't most schools have lockers? You can a locker at our school from year 7, anyways...

1) our school is slowly becoming less of a hole, because the new principal actual does her job and we are now getting renovations everywhere.

Yeah the yr 7- 9s get lockers, some yr 10s do, and noone else does :burn:

Goddamit they say coz the little kids' backs are still growing they need them more, but:
1) they have like 2 texbooks
2) people's bones don't fully develop until 25 - our backs are still developing too!
3) everyone's textbooks get stolen

anyways, yeah my school has renovations too and half the school is boarded up so to get from a to b involves a lap of the school (when it was one corridor before)

Likes:
1) Some of the teachers are awesome.
2) The new renovations from '04.
3) Senior lawn! And all the good things that seniority brings.
4) Academically alright.
5) School spirit

Dislikes:
1) The bad things that come about from being an all-girls school...like no people to perve on and bitchiness.
2) The new principal's policies towards learning and teaching "Generation Y". I think it's all bs, and also the fact she's bringing in laptop classes this year for year 7. Oh she thinks she's being so new age, NOT.
3) Immense distance to travel (2 hours back and forth everyday!)
4) Pressure to excel, and then trying to reassure myself that I'm surrounded by smart people.
5) Many people from our school being tracked down by our vice through the internet and blogs, and whatnot. :\ And then getting busted. Me not included.

Liked:
-Most people were smart, well mannered and got on with each other
-Lots of good teachers
-Very clean senior toilets
-the pretty cherry blossom trees in the school oval
-garunteed nap time in history class (lights go off, video starts, rest your head and go to sleep)


Disliked:
-School uniform is an embarrassment
-Science labs smells unholy
-So does the art block sink
-some psychos claiming to be teachers... whatever

1. traditions...they're not all bad
2. Location...ooh, that's a giveaway...we have really good views
3. quite a few of the teachers...for the subjects i'm doing anyway
4. tight...we're pretty small
5. wildest year group!!!

1. discipline for stupid things like wearing a ribbon in our hair and wearing a hat...
2. bogans who don't care about school (don't come then!)
3. small with not so amazing facilities
4. incest...everyone knows everyone and the parents all crowd around discussing gossip....except for my parents and me.
5. somewhat lack of true opportunity

THE GOODS:
we have the whole suburb as our canteen
everyone is pretty close
WE HAVE AIRCON EVERYWHERE!!
our receptionist gives us chocolate ^______^
we have a STuDeNT LOUNGE!

THE BADS:
there arent many people (school pop is abt 60)
it takes us half of lunch to decide what to eat
air con is too powerful .. it gets real cold T__T
O_O we dont have lockers!
we have a student lounge >> too much gaming T_______T"

Good things about my school (I'm at the Illawarra Senior College):

1. The four-day week
2. The location - we're right on the Tasman Sea, more or less
3. Getting to wear whatever the hell I please to school
4. The right to call my teachers by their first names
5. No students younger than Year 10

The bad:

1. The immature Year 10 students
2. The fact that it takes me 40 minutes on the bus just to get there
3. No option for doing languages (unless you feel like doing them by correspondence - not for me, sorry)
4. No air conditioning except in the library and the admin block - hence it gets stinking hot in summer
5. The main building is so old that the windows rattle when it's windy - and considering ISC is the old Port Kembla High School and was built in 1961, I'm not exactly surprised...
