Hi Charlotte! Any pointers for us 1st year nursing students?

Oh, wow. I'll try and come up with some, haha.

1. Download the UWS Nursing Style Guide and try to get APA referencing down. If you get it right, there's five marks right there. I'd put up a link for you to download it, but I only have a hard copy at the moment. It will definitely be on vUWS at the start of semster, though.
2. Try and pay attention in to the demonstrations in Skills classes because there is a good chance that they won't be covered in class again. The first thing I had to do on clinical was make a patient's bed and I had completely forgotten how to do it. But don't fear, the tutors are always willing to answer questions because they really want you to be the best nurse you can be.
3. I found it best to at least try and keep up with the reading all because some exams will ask questions that relate specifically to the reading material.
4. When on clinical, be a go-getter. Ask your RN whether there is anything you can do. Offer assistance when needed. Tell the RN that you don't know something. This shows that you are very eager to learn and will work to your advantage on the ward and in your marks.
5. But, most importantly, work within your own capabilities and recognise your limitations. There are RNs in the field that encourage (and even sometimes push) students to practice skills they have not been taught in class, ie. preparing IV medications with supervision as a first year (third year skill, I think). If you are faced in a situation such as this, you must be assertive and say that you are unable to participate in this as a first year student. Just watch the RN perform it instead. If your facilitator finds out that you have worked beyond your boundaries, you will get into trouble and an "at risk" report sent back to the Clinical Education Unit at your campus. But it isn't all bad - there are many interesting procedures taking place on the ward, and you will be encouraged to view them.

yo guys.

i'm jacqui, doing combined law at parramatta. technically i'm enrolled in social science but after a change of heart i'm hoping for a late round offer for business and commerce. i'm from mount colah which is north of hornsby which is way north of parramatta, so uni will be a bit of a trek for me and i pretty much know no one. i didn't go the academic advisory session so i'm still kind of friendless wah

Hey I did an orienteering role at campbelltown. They just put together the new medical centre/school. Its really smick, well designed and state of the art. I think its one of the leading medical course. Should be fun doing your course there.
