I dont see how the 2000 McCain is ANY different. President Bush beat him and has lead his party since, during great crisis and personal popularity. Of course he'll support him. Fast forward 8yrs when Hillary runs again, it's like the GOP saying that she'll represent the same failed, weak Obama administration because she half-heartedly campaigned for him in 08.
Sure, the campaign hasnt been perfect, but it's too simplistic to say that his campaign is bad and Obama's is good. You can pay for your own message, but the real oxygen is the free media and they have been nuts over the novelty of Obama since he won Iowa. Although they like to push impartiality by not commenting on who's better qualified to run the biggest and best country on earth, but they cover him to the shithouse. That's as powerful an endorsement as any. In this context, the novely of Palin was unavoidable. She has been essential to the little coverage this campaign has received. It's for all the wrong reasons, but it was a small risk compared to no coverage and the bigger risk of Obama winning.
I'd agree with Slidey in saying that the founders did not forsee 2008. Technology has undermined their noble efforts to make sure the qualitified establishment candidate is elected - rather than the mob tyranny
