Why not?

i dunno.. a head teacher was against it. a kid one year wanted to put "turbo boy" as his nickname or some rubbish like that and he wasn't allowed. he argued it and got the whole year forced to put 'names only'. i'm sure that policy still applies now.

At our school, surnames on the back, first names on the front chest. I think they are starting to ge a bit more lenient though, as you can get initials on the back or add a letter or take a bit off your name.

Eg. surname smith, you could put smithy

At our school they restrict us heaps just names or part of names, cos somegirl had one with some apparent "connotations"

and like... ppl call me stine [pronounced steen]
anyway.. it has resulted in my name being "weener"
so my friends have suggested to put that on my jersey.. i dont know though.. i have a year or so to decide.. lol

My mum packed my yr 6 one some dark place, she says my grandchildren will treasure it one day. Don't know if she'd do the same to the jersey. As if kids treasure their grans shirts anyway.

we're allowed to put stuff on the front -- under the school crest and on back of our jersey's, i'm thinking of:
Back: fragile
Front: handle with care
