I was going to do primary industries, but since it clashed with one of the other subjects i wanted to do (pd/h/pe) i didnt.

Also, drynxz, if u have a really good ag teacher at your school, u will be able to cope fine (i think!)

hey guys,

i did ag in year 11 and 12 - and i loved it to bits. it gets more detailed and specific but pretty much follows the knowing of an animal and plant production and farm system with the little extra pieces of info around.. or thats how it went with us. oh and in 12 you get the option of a research project to hand in instead of examinable electives..

the only pain in the back end -- i suppose -- is that the final ag mark for us was brought down because -- or are we just bitching here? =P -- we have to go up against the ag schools.

primary industries wasnt offered at my school.. so yea. our practical work was pretty regular and we did a fair share of outside school sheep judging and showing.

one of my mates picked up ag in year 11 - and it all just comes down to learning the key concept and as much as you dont want to hear it -- following up the syllabus.

for those that get offered a place at the Senior AgCamp - who've been to the Junior one, or havent even heard of this camp -- take it. its a ton of fun and great chance to socialise with other aggies.

goodluck guys -- im presuming there are still a few ex-senior ag'ers floating around here anyway for questions and that.

it'll be daunting at first because as you said, the kids in your class already know a lot of the stuff and for them its just an extension, but you will be beginning, but you'll get the hang of it
it's an easy subject where you can score considerably good marks with little effort
the stuff is really basic, you may even find it fun, prac lessons going out to the farm and what not

Hey Guys,
Yeah ag is the best! Its just like any other subject, if you understand the syllabus and how it all works its easy to learn. Its helpful if you have an interest in whats happening in agriculture, recent things like mulesing, NLIS tagging and Salinity are just a few cases that you can sometimes relate back to in extended response type answers. If you put a fair bit of effort into the assesment tasks like the product study it really pays off as study notes before exams. A lot of ag is about resource use, and the environment, so if you learn how to link practices back to the environment its a good skill to have and markers like it! hehe. Oh and as Sham said...GO TO THE YR 11 AG CAMP AT SYDNEY UNI! lol, its so good, and you make so many friends and its good to be able to help each other out in year 12! I did primary industries too, its really good if you like the practical side of ag, like building fences, stock work, weed control and all of those things. If you want a farm management type of career Primary Industries is good, you get a heap of competencies marked off and a certificate 2 in AG, so its really worthwhile. And for the people who have never done ag and have to do it in year 11 and 12 at hurlstone or other schools, its ok, i was in a class with lots of people who hadnt done ag before, it might seem tough at first, but you can do really well if you try hard and the teachers at hurlstone are pretty helpful if you just ask. So Goodluck and have fun!

hey. i did ag for all of secondary school, and both ag and primary industries for my hsc and loved it, but i love agriculture and now study it at uni.
i don't know if you've studied ag in the past, but in senior school it becomes a lot more science based. you study soil science and meat sturcture for example. what you learn about is generally up to your teacher, and as someone said there is an option between a research project or examinable electives. my teacher chose to do the electives which meant we learnt about animals and soil conservation but also meant doing an extra hour in hsc exams. it didn't worry us because the research project is a lot of work.
for the person wordering if they will be alright studying ag for the first time, yes you will, because it isn't a practical subject. as i said there is a fair bit of science which can, of course, be learnt from a book. one of my friends took the subject for prelim and came second in our course. another girl topped it, and then her. she's not remotely aggie, and learnt all of the things she knew through studying - so it can easily be done.
like most subjects i think a lot depends on your teacher. also having an interest in the subject is helpful.
i hope this helps a bit, if you want to know more just ask.
p.s. for the person that wanted tips on how to succeed in the subject, look really closely at the objectives of the course. if you cover these you should be pretty right. that goes for all hsc courses!

i'm sorry but your mark shouldn't go down because you are competing with ag high schools, the marks are scaled in accordance with your class at your school, not the state results. so basically, if on average your class goes badly, you will all go worse.

Hey Guys! Yeah i did ag by distance ed too. I really loved ag and the title pages are so relevant, heaps of the issues and questions that i answered in my weekly work were exactly what was in the exams. I had a really really good teacher too, i could ring her up and have a chat about anything, even the slightest problem. if you're doing it by distance ed, i guess its important to do your weekly work, but also make sure you get out the syllabus (and this goes for anyone doing ag) and cover every single dot point. I remember especially in the electives (i did sustainable land and resource management and horticulture) that the syllabus wasnt that long for those things!!! its so easy to answer the dot points and pick up marks. in the elective part of the exam you will probably get questions that relate so specifically to the dot points its not funny! So yeah its really really easy if you just follow the syllabus for the electives and dont learn things that you dont need to know. That also goes for the product study...things like learning what vertical integration is and how the quality of your product is measured...its all there in the syllabus too. The Plant/Animal Production is a bit more difficult to learn directly from the syllabus...I found that in the exams they could ask questions that weren't directly related, they seem to bring in questions that are relevant issues in agriculture...so its a good idea to get as much understanding about current issues as you can, like mulesing, quarantine issues and diseases, animal welfare, chemical resistance and the list goes on and on and on...But i guess what im saying is just follow that little syllabus...and dont freak out...ag can be so much fun to learn even if you have never done it before. Have fun!!!

hey, yea ag is interesting but not as fun as junior ag...i go to hurlstone so i got it good really...been around it since year 7 and i dunno...i rekon it helps, i also do primary industries...it seems not to fare so well in all the blah blah that pops out your UAI...but with a little work it seems easy enough to get a 95+ mark in which case it dosent really matter how they scale you,
