So, a new year is upon us, but what lies ahead? Just to get the ball rolling...

Today our trade agreements with the US and Thailand come into force.
The government shall determine whether it will pursue a trade deal with China.
The nature of commonwealth funding within the tertiary education sector changes from today (i.e., changes to hecs).
On 1 July the Coalition takes control of the Senate at the federal level.
Smoking bans within pubs and clubs start today.

Feel free to add anything that you think is worth mentioning, be it local, state, national, regional or global in nature.

My bet is there's going to be turmoil in the UN, probably with Kofi Annan getting the boot. His replacement will be former Labor Foreign Minister Garath Evans.

The US is going to try and patch up its chilly relations with European nations starting with a BBQ on the front lawn of the White House.

Possibly there's going to be progress on Iraq. Perhaps through a series of working bees starting in Fallujah (bring sunscreen and a hat).

Massive reconstruction effort in Tsunami hit areas of South East Asia. I can see India perhaps taking a leading role in this which will perhaps help forge an EEC style community in SE Asia. Failing that, India will use it's nuclear weapons to mutate its citizens along the coast so they can grow gills.

A couple of questions for anyone who knows:

1: What's happening with the proposed airport at Badgery's creek, Richmond or Bankstown? Have they cancelled that idea already? If they're not going ahead with it, which suburbs in the future will be affected by increased flight volume at Mascot-i.e from altered/added flight paths?

2. A couple of years ago they proposed a railway that went from Burwood/Strathfield to Hurstville via Campsie and Kingsgrove underground. Is that line still going to be built?

3. I heard a few weeks ago that the kangaroo population was at a dangerously high level, despite getting hunted and killed in huge numbers. This over-population results in competition with cattle and other roos for land/water/food-i.e eventually leading to mass starvation. In light of this, is there going to be a push to have more roos killed-i.e removal of many kangaroo-conservation laws? Many would say a quick gun-death is less painful than gradually starving to death.

Theres already an airport at bankstown ... and theres a raaf base at richmond and i don't think the epa cleared badgery's creek - but not sure.

The government promotes the rail link being built between chatswood and epping as a major break through ... when the stupid trains don't even bloody run on time!

Kangroos are native - cattle aint .. end of story.

In 2005 there will probably be:
- more U.s and bush world domination
- ciry rail trains running later than ever

i meant if any of those airports were going to be used in the future for commercial flights...because kingsford smith might be getting a bit overcrowded.

i think that its already overcrowded. They can't use richmond cause it belongs to the airforce. I'm pretty sure that bankstown residents opposed the idea of having a bigger airport. And the idea of badgery's creek was scrapped.

The government suggested of building an airport down near goulburn ... meaning the state government plans to urban spread sydney as far south as goulburn!

And if they went ahead in the proposed idea of "joining" Sydney with Newcastle and Wollongong...it'd be a pretty long drive(over 200km?) from one part of the "city" to another.

With the Goulbourn airport-what's the chance of that going ahead? Is it a certainty.

I just remembered this useless little fact-i.e the largest urban area in the world in terms of area-which is Mount Isa at a bit over 43000 km squared. I wonder if Sydney will overtake that record if the goulbourn, newcastle and wollongong expansions take place?

I'm hoping they build one of those 300km/h+ bullet train railways to get from goulbourn to the cbd quickly if the airport gets built-although I'm sure Cityrail or whoever's in charge will manage to find a way to delay them regularly, somehow. But still, it would be better than driving for 2 hours just to get to campbelltown, and it'd provide the ultimate rail experience-going at those speeds.

I think that it was only a suggestion. But we definately do need another airport - with sydney constantly promoting itself as a major tourist destination - are surge in the number of people will cause havick in the airport ... its already a pain to get to the airport.

I just remembered about the Mt Isa thing as well

Maybe not ay... the first A380 rolled of the line, capable of carrying 800 passengers in a full economy configuration... thats the solution for me!

...calling the changes a "kick in the guts" to the battlers who had re-elected Mr Howard.
They trusted Howard, they gave him the power and now they are having their pretty little throats cut open. It serves them right, I hope they lose their jobs and realise the folly of their vote.

Essentially though, Howard hasn't done anything morally wrong. He did say you could trust him to keep the economy strong- just don't trust him in safeguarding your job.

I really do blame the morgadge belt for our problems, If they just didnt want a 4WD and fiscal management, they might realise there is more to australia then assets and liabilities and they could have seen past the Liberal wankers
