Men are from Earth. Women are from Earth.
But the Feminist Movement is from Uranus.
25 November, 2004
The University of Sydney is a very female-friendly place. We have a well-paid Women’s Officer at the SRC, and a well-paid Women’s Officer at the USYD Union. But we don’t have a Men’s officer or a Men’s space on campus, and this strikes me as unfair in the least. In this article, I focus on the SRC, but my criticisms do not lie with them alone.
During my 2004 campaign for SRC President, I promoted the idea of a gender-neutral Gender Issues Officer, who would be in a position to deal with the unique issues facing both men of women of different backgrounds. Central to this idea was an acknowledgement that women’s rights equal human rights, but so do men’s rights, and for our Women’s Office to deny the needs of men in society smacks of reverse discrimination of the worst kind. Not surprisingly, my proposal was harshly criticised by our overly politicised SRC, whose political interests don’t include representing the “evil” male population at the University.
The Women’s Office actively promotes the one-sided view of feminist politics, encouraging their “sisters” in our student body to make a stand against the evil men out to oppress women. Its main role is to promote the rights of women – this is all well and good – BUT it does so by attacking the rights of men. Something the SRC Women’s Office has always failed to realise is that in promoting the rights and achievements of women, they do not need to downplay the rights and achievements of men.
But not only does it not represent men, it is also blind to the values and beliefs of many women throughout this University. The Women’s Office of the SRC seems to believe that all women have a shared political interest, which all women should support (“Vote for me because I’m a woman!”, “Vote for Party A because Party B opposes abortion/breastfeeding/whatever” etc.), and it is on this basis that our student funds continue to maintain this office. I believe this mentality is flawed at best.
Looking at a significant issue to the women’s office – abortion – there does not seem to be a consensus among women, who are generally split equally between pro-life and pro-choice. Only by demeaning pro-life women, dismissing their beliefs as unenlightened and uninformed, can our advocates at the SRC and Union , and at the University itself, explain the “women-oppressing” mentality of their “sisters”. Certainly, any sort of disagreement with the Women’s Office is dismissed as “reactionary politics”, or “perpetuating the patriarchy”. I say that such “identity politics” does not belong in our universities as it polarises men and women in a cause which should be fought by both genders for the benefit of both genders. Whatever happened to the idea that human rights are universal? That is, that all human beings possess the same rights, which are not determined by differences such as gender or race? The fact that we have universal rights would suggest that all of us who share those rights have an interest in protecting these rights, whether they are male or female.
Certainly, it is in all our interests to promote ideas such as equal rights and freedom of speech – it is this cherished freedom which allows me to write this article. The Women’s office would argue however that men and women do NOT share the same interests in freedom of speech. My writings have been criticised in the past for “oppressing women (and thus perpetuating the patriarchy)”, when all I have argued is equal rights for men at the University. In asking for more rights for men, it is perceived that I am taking away rights from women, but I believe that rights for men equals rights for women.
The feminists of yesteryear fought for equal rights. Denying men their rights completely undermines the cause.
Myers sounds interesting. too bad i hate talking to customers... or people in general haha. its so much fun cause i just sit at a computer listening to music and working on my arse all day and i can work whenever i'm available hahaha!babydoll_ said:I ran out of bubble wrap

Allow me to walk within seven feet of you along the road
走到*街口 對著背影揮手
We reach the end of your street, I wave goodbye to your back
並沒運氣共*拖過手
Without the fortune to have held your hand...
然而在暗地裡跟*游過街 也就*
Yet it is suffice to have secretly walked with you through these streets
跟蹤* 十八天
On the eighteenth day of following you

Expecting you to fall asleep on the early train carriage
迎面北風呼呼 關好窗** 睡好點
The incoming north wind roaring, I close the window, waiting for you, so you sleep better
跟蹤* 廿七天
On the twenty-seventh day of following you
陪著*偷偷摸摸一起進戲院
I accompany you secretly together into the cinemas
隔著兩米與*看好戲上演
Two metres apart we watch an acclaimed movie on the silver screen
總算共* 曾同時覺得心軟
At least we felt moved at the same time

我愛* 有陣時不必真*講出口
Sometimes the words I love you don't need to be spoken
望了*很久 但我從未開口
I've gazed at you for ages, but I still haven't opened my mouth,

Following you in company along the way, is already sufficient...
