I guess what everyone has said, maths and physics. But you said you find English hard so to get around the 90s (which can be tough), so then you should also work on English in relativeness.

A lot of my friends have got into UNSW Engineering with 2U maths. They don't look at your subjects as long as you reach their required ATAR entry. If you wanted to apply with a lower ATAR, then your subjects may be taken under consideration.

The big difference however, is if you come first at any school, the rank of your school, or academic level of your peers do not matter anymore. Being first means you have the same chance as anyone from Ruse, even their #1, at getting a high atar, which is then pushed through in the external exams.

It doesn't, but it can be assumed that generally as a schools rank is lower, so are the general academic levels of that schools cohorts. Although there can be students who stand out, in a school ranked 200+, being ranked eg. Last, would give you a much different result in your internal weighting...

You need both. The syllabus is very important as that's all the stuff that might be asked. However reading only notes from the syllabus is not a good substitute for doing past papers, and vice versa. You need knowledge AND exam technique which can only be done through exam condition practice...

I'd say what would likely drag him down, even though his estimate could be in the 90s, is the fact that with a school ranked in the 100s, his externals will play a pretty big influence in his atar. Nothing is "really" or substantially dragging him down though.
