    UNSW chit chat thread

Re: UNSW chit chat thread 2016 No I'm keen to go back to uni and start again and I have really cool courses to do this sem but I'm actually getting close to burning out.

    ELEC1111 or PSYC1001??

Yeah ELEC1111 is a tough course. Probably harder than half the 2nd year courses I've done back at the time. If I were to do 1111 now however I would do really well. Are you planning to do engineering under either school of mech, elec or comp? If so, then take 1111.

    Always sleeping after school?

Just be patient and stay awake until 9 or 10 pm. Then fall asleep and fix up your sleeping pattern with a solid 8 to 9 hours. You have a good opportunity to do this right now.

    2016 Sem 1 Timetables Thread

I don't think I've ever seen a timetable with no back to back classes haha. You can put classes back to back if you wish. Generally classes start 5 mins after the hour and finish 5 mins before the hour so there is time for you to go from class to class.

intern and job qns (electrical, civil, mechanical)

Yeah electrical engineering is very broad and to help solve an energy crisis you would want to be proficient in communication with other engineers (you'll communicate with other engineers from electrical, mechanical and materials science mainly). Don't worry though, after a while you'll gain...

    Ac and Dc generators question

Economic reasons for AC: - More efficient over long distances - Less power stations are required as a result - AC power is more readily manipulated by transformers and rectifiers. You can use those points and base it off how the main structural differences allow AC satisfy these requirements...

UNSW, UniMelb or UniSyd for Masters in IT/CS?

I would say that this is probably one of the few cases where world rankings would indicate a particular uni to shift towards.

From Adelaide! Will my maths level be sufficient for compsci?

If you are familiar with parts of the mathematics extension 1 or mathematics extension 2 syllabus components in NSW, then you should be ok with consistent effort. If you are familiar with parts of the mathematics syllabus components in NSW, then you'll need to put in a lot of work in first year.

    Mechanical vs Mechanical AND Manfacturing

I would say that most employers will just note it down as a mechanical engineering degree with manufacturing electives predominantly. Unless someone tells employers otherwise, I don't think it would be taken as an extended program for mechanical engineering.

    UNSW rollcall 2016

Dw I have friends in mech/eng who have taken ages to finish as well. There are others out there in a similar situation. The elec equivalent of MMAN3200 was pretty fast paced and there was way too much content to learn. I can imagine MMAN3200 is the same.

    ELEC2141 digital circuit design

You should be fine in first year if you have an interest in digital systems. It's a good course and a good introduction into basic engineering design. The assignments are very beneficial. Only do it in first year if you are a BE ME student. All other students should do it in second year. First...

How is university different to high school?

Depends on the uni but generally no. At UNSW I just type in the course code, course outline and semester into google (eg "FINS1613 course outline 2015 semester 1")

How is university different to high school?

You can read previous semesters' course outlines to gauge what the course structure will be like. You could also ask past students who have done the course.

    HSC Physics Marathon 2016

How is university different to high school?

Oh yeah one thing I forgot to mention from before which others have already iterated here. The main difference is that you are independent and have to make more of your own choices every day than before. This includes choices about your study. You have much more responsibility over yourself...

How is university different to high school?

Well other than final exams (which I've kept the same mentality for uni as I did with high school), everything is a lot more different. Assignments end up being just as D94 said earlier. The type of stuff I have to do and what I have to learn is completely different. HSC is a 14 month...

    2016 Sem 1 Timetables Thread

There's a 1.5 hr block that only occurs 3 weeks for the whole semester as that is a lab exam slot (well at least that occurred for semester 2 but I can imagine it also occurring for semester 1).
